In the absence of experience, that’s the weird thing about assumptions. They’re often wrong.
That kimber is easier on the shoulder then the browning Abolt 2 in .338 win it replaced and softer recoiling then the tikka m695 in .300 win mag that I owned previously. I had a Husky in .308 win that beat me MUCH harder then that kimber does as well.
There is a lot more to felt recoil then overall weight.

Yeah I would agree. I had a howa 1500 (unbraked) in 338 win mag that would absolutly make me question my existence EVERY time I shot it. Loaded some pug loads for it and made it tolerable but that rifle weighed 10lbs scoped. I don't see how your 7lb rifle doesn't just beat the snot out of you. Sounds like the perfect mountain rifle since it doesn't though!

This little turd doesn't fit in with all the beautiful rifles you guys have posted so far but it was my elk slayer.

- Savage 111 30-06 in left hand flavor
- Factory 110 stock bought of ebay to replace the wood stock it came with
- Tasco Silver Antler 3-9x40
- Groups 2 MOA or less with 180gr Winchester PP's, shooting off of backpacks, tree limbs, knees etc.
- Weighs about 7.5 lbs

This was my first rifle, bought from a pawnshop for $300. Before that, I always borrowed one of my dad's rifles.

I didn't find out until a decade later, after killing many elk and deer, that my setup was junky by most people's standards. I thought being able to keep all my shots inside of a paper plate, in various field positions, out to 300 yds, was just dandy.

Since then, I've retired this rifle, spent thousands on better rifles and scopes, and stress all the time about how tight my groups are. Hell, I don't even hunt elk anymore!

I miss the good ol' days when anything inside the paper plate was good and I dropped animals every year!

So this necro thread has been alive so long my 2020 post is no longer accurate. Back on pg one I have a walnut/blue Kimber 84m in 308. That is now my backup Elk gun. As of last season here is where I’m sitting:

Stalking setup with open sights for fastest target acquisition. 5lb 9oz


I leave my Scope in my backpack side pocket when stalking and can mount it in about 10 seconds start to finish with the factory QD mounts. Vintage Schmidt & Bender fixed 4x + mount brings the weight to 6lbs 13oz


Pre-season hike in or post harvest hike out it breaks in half with no tools in seconds to 20” total length to easily slide into my pack.


So from 2020 I’ve kind of made some backwards progress. Shorter barrel, longer action, single shot from a repeater, 4 oz heavier. What the hell am I thinking?? Frankly I don’t really care, I smile ear to ear every time I shoulder it. Insanely accurate, switch barrel, and points like a dream.

Tikka T3X Stainless 30.06. right out of the box, except these two things. Rattlecan paint job. Replaced factory grip with the Tikka vertical grip. Leupold VX3 B&C 4-14X 50mm scope. 7.5 lbs field ready with scope, strap and a full 5 round mag.

edit: Oh I forgot, it also has a limb saver recoil pad. Those things make it a lot nicer to shoot.

I can't note any meaningful difference in weight on my bathroom scale. Feel is great. I got the McMillan used. Not sure the upgrade warrants the new price McMillan is charging.

Yes its a short action, I haven't worked a load up yet. Im using factory remington ammo right now with 160 partitions. I have purchased some 162gr ELDx that I am going to try once I get the hard work of emptying brass done.
