I have an 18” suppressed 7SAUM being put together for elk/muley backpack hunts. It’ll be a long bolt stop and mag T3x sitting in a MDT HNT26 folder. Load work up will focus on 160 class Eldx, Eldm, Bergers and TGK’s. Would also consider 180 Eldm/Hybrids if I thought I’d have enough steam to push em. Only interested in temp stable powders.

For those that have done a shorter SAUM, what did you run? What speeds were you able to push the 160s?

I don’t know if it’s considered all that short but I have a long action origin with a 22’ bartlien cut with a longer freebore. 180 Berger hybrid, ADG brass, 64 gns of h1k 2900 fps. Primers look good no visual signs of pressure. Shoots clover leafs. 7 saum with 180 hybrids on the left 6.5 prc with 156 eol on the rightIMG_1583.jpegIMG_1578.jpegIMG_1070.jpeg

Nice looking set up! The one thing keeping me away from a 22” barrel is my plan to use a suppressor. Have you found that set up too long? This will be open country deer/elk.

I definitely wouldn’t go longer. I only run suppressed. I feel like it’s still plenty handy with my tbac dominus. I’m doing range work with my Magnus RR. I definitely think 4’ vs 100 fps is worth the trade off but I hunt out west and not out of a blind or thick cover.

Have a PBB 18" 7 SAUM, SAAMI spec chamber, with 62gr of N560 I'm moving 168 VLDH at around 2850.

I'm just passing 100rnds and hope it speeds up a bit. Also not seeing any pressure signs so I could probably push more, but this makes nice groups

20” Gunwerks Magnus here. Tried the 160 Accubond and RL-23, accuracy was fine but the 145 LRX was way more consistent at 3040 with H4831.

That’s what I needed to see, for me 2850 would be plenty of speed with the 160 class bullets.

22" long action Tikka and i've really only shot 175-180s in it but low 2800s over H4831 or H1000. Also, 145 CEB Lazers over h4350 at about 3050 FPS.

This was the first rifle I hunted with suppressed. 22" plus TBAC u7 was too long for me to want to hunt with. I've moved to mostly smaller cartridges and 18" barrels and haven't shot the 7 much in recent years. It might just become my dedicated "long range" rifle with a can now and not see action in the thick stuff. I bet it behaves nicely with some of the new cans with brakes.

20" with a dominus, 175 EH, 61g n560, medium action, adg @ 2840. 9.5 lbs. shoots really well in all conditions/elevations/temps. Manageable recoil for the awkward positions I find myself in.

Real happy with it, but I'm a tinkerer. Every time I think about testing different bullets or powders for it I'm reminded of profound words of Alan Garner:

Good info on the 22” + can. I definitely think that would be a little long for me as well, just trying to decide between 18” and 20”. The short/compact Airlock Industries 7mm Zero Gravity will work out perfectly for this build.

Even at 18" with an ultra 7 I get hung up in the thick stuff, I'm not sure a couple inches either way would help much.

I just picked up a couple lbs of N560 but have to experience with it as of yet. Only complaints I’ve heard have been with temperature stability, though it seems you’ve had no glaring issues in this area? That’s good to hear. Every powder varies with temperature swings, I just don’t want to deal with extreme changes in the 60°F - 0°F of Oct/Nov in Idaho.
