Senate vote public lands sale

Anyone else wondering, now that the public lands part is dead, what the hell is actually in this bill? Starting to think it was a bait/switch or distract type psyop.
$4T in tax cuts (I guess the deficit isn't an issue anymore, awesome!)
$930B in Medicaid cuts (15 million people will lose their health insurance)
10 year ban on state regulation of AI, when we need more regulation on it desperately.

It's a 900 page bill so there's a bunch of fun stuff in it.
Was the bit about the courts not being able to issue an injunction against the executive branch removed?
If not, that's some insane legislation that effectively voids the separation of powers.
The Supreme Court largely just curbed that power this week, at least at the federal court level. A side effect of that actually gives the Supreme Court more power though which I'm sure they knew they were doing. For now it goes that way but when dems get back in, the 5th Circuit won't be able to do what it's been doing to democrats (like their injunction blocking the Biden FTC from banning non-competes) so the pendulum swings.

I want to know why so many Republican Senators were ok with this...
Pro states rights, 10th Amendment, local control, anti big government ineptitude, etc. That’s the official line. I generally agree with those ideas, but not in this particular case.

The fact that Republicans in Montana and Idaho wanted their states opted out is telling.

Musk has vowed to see that every congressman who votes yes for "OBBB" gets removed in the next election "if it is the last thing he ever does." Not sure he'll actually have the influence do personally see to that come 2026, but it should be some wild political theater.

Know nothing about LDS. Is any of this true? Do they have to pay taxes like a business or like a church?

The LDS church does have a business side to it. They have a pretty big hedge fund and a few other entities that they own. So there is two sides, the church side and the business side. How they pay taxes, I couldn't say but I do know that the funds they acquire via tithing cannot be used for the business side.

The LDS church does own a lot of land and they do have a lot of cash. They have something like 32000 churches, 350 temples and tons of historical sights that they own. They also own church farms in many different states. If you want to read something kind of cool, read into how efficient they are with humanitarian aid when there is a disaster.

Whether or not one can follow the dots and that the LDS church is in Lees ear over this...that would be a conspiracy that until it can be proven true would just be a conspiracy. Would it surprise me? No. Would it surprise me if they weren't? Also no. If the land did become for sell, I wouldn't blame them for buying it.

Disclaimer. I am not interested in arguing anything about the LDS church. Just trying to answer some of the questions presented.

It doesn't directly speak to why Mike Lee, and Utah generally, is so pro land sale, but High Country News did a piece on the PR push to support it.

You really put that well, I also share almost exactly the same take on it. My gut impression is that most of the efforts coming out of Utah's Congressional delegation over the years is cultural, combined with just how much of Utah is owned by the Federal government, but as you said, it also wouldn't surprise me if something else more intentional were going on.

Good articles:

Now we have these clowns writing an article in the WSJ that Trump should sell lands without it in the bill anyway. I happened to note they both are lifetime academic think tank people that are happy to sell off the public lands in the west while they live in Florida & Washington DC..... Wonder who is funding them?

WSJ is owned by News Corp same as Fox News. Basically right wing propaganda machine at this point.

This WyoFile article is a good one. Folks in Wyoming (and Utah!!) and any other state should be reconsidering strongly whether their leadership are the right ones to put back in power moving forward. We can’t be so quick to celebrate that we forget those who were totally ok with what almost was a great loss to all of us. Next election cycle will be here before we know it.
