Senate vote public lands sale

Just read the same thing. Appears that "as written" it violates chamber rules. Lee responded in the article I read (AP) saying that he will be removing USFS lands entirely from the bill and have wording that only BLM parcels that are "within 5 miles of population centers could be sold."

Not a great scenario, but better than it was. I think (unfortunately) that he will have a much easier time pushing a revised bill through with the above provisions. The problem is still that selling these lands to developers isn't going to help with housing affordability. At this point the only thing that is going to help with that is a reset of property values in many places. There are almost 8,000 homes for sale in Las Vegas right now, they don't need more houses.
I would like to see the investor owned properties regulated. While I am not a big fan of regulation, when 20% of the homes are purchased by investors/reits/corps, it has a very negative effect on first time/new home purchasers by increasing pricing.

I agree with this entirely. It's warping market forces in ways that are hurting people's ability to simply afford to raise a family.

At the risk of sidetracking the thread...

Investor purchases make up something like 25% of the single-family home market, and that percentage has been more or less stable for 15 years. When people say investors they usually mean Blackrock, but large-scale investors make up something like 5% of the total single-family home market. Small scale investors make up about 20%. That's everyone who hangs on to their starter home after moving up, owns a couple rentals on the side, just about every realtor I've ever met, etc...

In both cases it's lack of supply driving the investment instead of the other way around. The big firms say this explicitly in their public filings. For the mom and pops a ton of these aren't even profitable without appreciation, much less actually worth the risk and headache. But as long as property values only go up, and sometimes by double digits per year, any leveraged investment should do great.

Anyhow, to bring it back to OPs thread, if housing affordability is something you care about don't be fooled into thinking this land sale will help.

Mike Lee’s real intention had nothing to do with affordable housing for his constituents or others in the USA. His plan was to get rich , schemed up behind the scenes for his cronies and himself down the the road once the bill was passed. Taking MT off his bill shows how really stupid and arrogant Mike Lee really is. Like I stated earlier, Lee thinks he is the smart one in the room and he thinks the rest of us are sheep and will follow his corrupt, self absorbed greed. Lee is a snake and the only way to prevent this in the future is to cut the head off the snake. Lee needs to be kept out of any future political positions and made a public embarrassment.

Pay the land owners for public hunting access. Land owner tags are bad because outfitters get exclusive hunting on those private properties. If landowner tags are put into the public draw, states are letting landowners sell hunts on their property to valid public draw tag holders. Check out Infinite Outdoors. They also pay landowners who will allow hunters to cross private land in a checkerboard to get to public lands.. Last I heard they were not charging hunters for that crossing.

Still doing the infomercials I see.

No one wants to live in Albuquerque because elections have consequences. New Mexico is a completely screwed up place to do business because of its government.

Live some where nice, and work side jobs to buy tags in nm.

Somebody was talking about selling off the checkerboard BLM….no need to do that. We can get across the private land. New Mexico made the mistake of selling off the hunting to Outfitters. We no longer have to live with that mistake…and we won’t.

Your reading comprehension is poor, I’ve spoken about selling off land locked which isn’t checkerboard. Checkerboard is a pia for everyone public and private. it should be consolidated imho.

Same concept. The state needs to get off it’s ass and start paying landowners for either crossing and or hunting.

Back on track.

Keep the phone calls and emails going.

Newest version is BLM only. Within 5 miles of a population center (undefined) as of yet.

A fraction of the proceeds goes for BLM enhancement. A fraction goes to BLM deferred maintenance (which had been underfunded by Congress).

I can think of some BLM parcels close to population centers that are incredibly important for recreation.

If Senator Lee is hell bent on selling federal land he can do it in Utah viaduct the mechanisms already in place.

It’s dead, didn’t pass the Byrd rule and won’t get the 60 votes required to for supermajority.

it’s not over till it’s over. I don’t think it’s matters what Lee changes. Doubtful that it will get back into reconciliation. i doubt that Thune will sideline filibuster items. Just one man’s opinion though.
