Semi auto shotgun vs pump

I'm looking at a semi auto shotgun Beretta 1301 vs a 9 shot mossberg 590a1 for grizz defense. I live all around em and see them decently often no problems yet. I know, pay attention. However I hike alot with my kids and want the peace of mind. My thought for a pump is a dead round goes click and no need to manipulate to get the next. If that auto loader gets a problem wether a jam or malfunction your getting ran over. What would you all choose? General discussion, want other opinions on the subject. Thanks.

I would go with the reliability of a pump if my life and my kids were on the line.
I’m the opposite. Shot a pile of shotguns, had semis and pumps jam up. I’d take the beretta personally. I would run a few boxes of shells through it before I relied on it for defense. I have never met or seen someone who can run a pump faster than they can run a semi. I have a few semiautos that have never had a hiccup when I’m shooting. I cannot say the same for any of my pumps.

You won't have time to shoot more than once,,,go with a single shot... they're a lot lighter & more reliable,

I trust a good semi auto more than a pump for self defense against anything. The shaking man with his heart about to jump out his throat had better have a lot of time shooting that pump if he's going to get fast accurate hits on target without short shucking it, especially with full power buckshot which has brutal recoil.

1301 tactical is the easy choice here if money doesn't matter. You can get a lot of buckshot in the air in a hurry, especially the low recoil kind.

I've participated in firearms platform vetting processes in federal law enforcement and there's a reason that the U.S. Marines went with a Benelli M4. If I was in your position and had to choose between the shotguns you mentioned for the purpose you mentioned, I'd be buying the Beretta 1301, which is a very reliable shotgun.

I like the reliability of a pump shotgun, but it would be nice to be able to unload 3 or 4 shots quickly with a semi auto.

I would still pick a pump gun for self defense. Price is the biggest difference for me. I know you can't put a price on the life of your family, but my sloppy Mossbrrg 500 hasn't jammed on me.

The only advantage a pump has is the ability to shoot less lethal ammo and breaching ammo and whatever else you want to feed it. Autos won't cycle bean bags. If it's only job is flinging buckshot, semi auto all day. I've never seen any semi auto jam with buckshot.

I've never had any issues with any semi auto shotgun I've owned. Currently have a Mossberg 930JM and have never had a failure with it. If i was going to get something short for carrying in the woods I would go with one of the Benellis or a Mossberg. The Beretta is probably just as good, just don't have any experience with them.

As far as pumps go, I've watched plenty of people short stroke a pump while shooting skeet and fail to eject and load a new shell. Something you have to think about in a high stress situation.
Exactly what I thought... I've seen plenty of people short stroke a pump under the stress of a clay or a bird.

Im my experience a brown bear is a little more intimidating...

That 1301 is very reliable, and foolproof.

Although I've grown up wing shooting with a pump and semiauto and have years behind bolth. I'll be opting for the 1301 comp 24" or 21", I figured it can also be used for turkey and grouse along with being a new 3 gun shotgun. Lots of practice with all that and I'll be extremely familiar with it leading to be the most affective platform.

The reason the military goes/has gone with pumps, it is the environment they are in all the time. Also, you have to look, back in the day, they had to worry about shells not performing more than we do now. One last thing on old military, there are/were a lot less moving parts on a pump than an automatic (you're out in the field, you don't want some small part breaking, and they are a lot easier to strip down and clean in the field)

You may be more inclined to use that automatic in your situation, you're not out in it for days. Also, if something happens, a youngster may have a lot more chance to get off more than one round if it does go sideways.

That just boils down to knowing how to use whatever tool you have. I wont say that a pump can be ran as fast as a semi. But a person that knows how to run a pump gun. Can get rounds on target pretty quick.
