I am in the process of getting a Tikka action SBR'ed. I am looking for an efficient cartridge for a 10-12" barrel to use on whitetail out to 300 yards.

Some restrictions- 223 is going to be a sure suggestion but I already have one at 16" that is a great shooter, so not looking to cut that one or double down on 223. Also, I have 30 cal and down suppressors, so over 30 cal is out, for now. Also, being conscious of suppressor restrictions so things like prc or creedmoor might be out.

I was thinking 6/22 arc? Maybe 6 gt? Anything else I might be missing?

6ARC is impressive in short barrels.

6dasher if you reload.

I haven’t seen 6GT data in short barrels, but probably looks good.

I think 6ARC with 87vmax or 95tmk or 95nbt at 12” speeds will handle 300 yards no sweat.

If you have a 223 bolt face - you’d probably be happy with a throated 6x45 for 87’s or 95’s.

87 vmax will hold adequate velocity for killing whitetail past 300 yards at 2450 MV…

All this to say, if you’re going for minimum force necessary that’s the answer with 223 bolt. If you’re going for easy button in standard bolt face it’s probably the GT to eliminate any need for special mags or feed issues.

I’ve had good luck with 6mm Arc in short barrels. Good accuracy & the efficiency of the short little cartridge does well with less barrel length.

I would consider using a Howa mini action instead of the Tikka… the action is a more than an inch shorter than the Tikka & the rifles end up being significantly lighter and more compact.

Anyone get the 6 arc feeding well in Tikkas. I know there is the bold issue which can be solved with some $ to a gunsmith but I thought feeding was still an unresolved problem.

If thats not the case I might very well build one.
