Haha. Too cold for most corn up there. They mainly grow soy beans, canola, sugar beets.

So far I would say plan earlier

1/2" steel is difficult to work with if you don't know what you are doing, but super cheap at metal recycling places. I picked up enough steel and recycled chain to make like 20 targets for $100. Admitted defeat today and having someone else weld chain to the plates.

Maybe different from other events, but shooter will identify the target before the time starts. Honestly this is because Justin and I know where the targets are and we want to compete on a level playing field as possible. Also, they ain't easy to see.

Ran the course today w 7 shooters. Hopefully the others will jump in w feedback.

Overall I thought things went well, a couple targets didn’t hold welds/had to be reset, but otherwise the scrap metal worked out.

We had 12 stations and shot around 33 rounds each.

6 of the stations were some variation of standing supported/off hand. Ranges from 50-120 yards

5 stations some variation of sitting/kneeling supported ranges 150-680yards

1 station sitting unsupported.

2 stations required reloads


Shooter ability varied and we made some allowances to keep things fun for everyone.
We decided to approach station 1 at a time w an RO waiting to point out targets. Targets were painted various colors, some painted to make ID more difficult.

Targets ID’d, shooters ranged, shooter ready, go.

I had set some arbitrary max times allowed per station, no one exceeded, most could have been cut in half.

Scoring was total points/total time = score.

Today was pretty legit, very humbling. I thought I was fairly dialed in, and had a good pre-shot sequence. That all went to shit the moment I was told go. After each iteration, I had stuff to improve on for the next station.

I can’t wait to do this again.

Not sure, spring maybe? I’d really like to find some longer range/steeper angle opportunities. Def doable in this area.

We ran the course beginner friendly this time, which I think was the right move for a first run. Going forward will plan on running it more competitively.

Couple different stations. Shorter shots were often through narrow gaps, targets placed in shadows, only painted edges, etc. One station you had to sit on a rock edge w a pretty good drop off.

Small sample size but interesting. Who was the person earlier that implied nobody can shoot a caliber bigger than a 6.5 accurately?

E shot the big gun well, have some videos of him managing recoil. It had a muzzle brake on it, so that helped him (did I mention I dislike being around them). To be fair we were shooting pretty large targets at relatively short distances.

Looks like lots of different setups. Did one seem better than another? Big tripod vs shooting sticks vs backpack?

Hard to draw any conclusions. The tripod setup w a quick throw lever on the Arca ball head was nice, but probably slower than a guy practiced w sticks.

I really like the way we scored the event total points/total time, you could hit more targets and still lose to someone faster overall. At the ranges and target sizes we were shooting, relatively high hit rates, speed mattered and sticks w backpack were stable enough.
