Revolvers

Sweet setup. Handgun hunting is a ton of fun and gets around the weapon restriction zones up here in MT.

Any idea how the Ultradots do with an astigmatism?
I used the ultradot for bullseye competition with my SW 41 (not a revolver, of course). After a while, the dot image turns into a connected pair of lozenges, but I was still able to get a consistent point of aim. Changing the brightness and dot size helped sometimes.

My model 69, 2.75" barrel loaded w/ 305 gr hard casts is a "bear" to shoot. It actually bruised the swell of thumb up pretty bad when I sighted it in. I now reserve range use to .44 Special only :D

I don't have rancher hands... I've found covering the metal backstrap to be essential with full power loads in a .44 magnum. Otherwise I have the same experience as you.

Changing out grips made shooting 44mag loads a bit more enjoyable.

I'm still not goona stuff 305's into the thing...no way :ROFLMAO:

I've always been a revolver fan. A nice single six is about as much fun as a bucket of bouncy balls. Single action .45 blackhawks are ultra fun and cheap to feed if you reload. Can be loaded from pop gun to .44 mag horsepower.

I'm excited to see smith is easing away from the internal lock. Its a shame the ol federal 357B load has gone away. It seems the days of 125gr SJHP .357 ammo are getting short.

I'm a big fan of the Ruger SP101. Small and light enough to be carried easily but still a joy to shoot. It rides in my chest holster when I bow hunt and gets swapped out from the rifle during pack out trips during rifle season.....and gets shot a ton the rest of the year at the range.

Do you know how those are with hot 44 Special loads? I've wondered how they'd be with a 240 at 1,100 or so, which is honestly just fine as a "bear protection load", IMO. Had a scandium 357 for awhile, but gifted to a GF. Is okay with her with 38 Special loads.
I typically load a 200gr powder coated cast bullet and don’t try to push velocity. If I’m carrying that piece in the woods I load it up with some 240gr jhp’s loaded to mid level velocities. No need to push them hard, it’s more for moose and lion defense than anything in my area. The 329pd isn’t as bad to shoot as it’s made out to be imho, though I’ve considered selling it because I carry a g45 due to training with it far more than a revolver.

Since we can generate 23 pages of content about 9mm tupperware pistols...

Why no love for 7-8 rounds of .357 magnum wadcutters and the ability to dry fire a double action wheel gun so much more easily than a semi auto?

Ready-set-go!
I love me some wheel guns. The firearm that I most regret selling was my S&W 500, it was just so expensive to shoot, but really fun. All I currently have is my s&w 629 pea shooter.

I do plan on getting another 500, and just reload for it. I would love to kill a big bear or blacktail with one. I have had a lot of various revolvers over the years, but am fond of big bore revolvers, I don’t like recoil, but revolvers are the exception, they are just fun to shoot… the guy I used to work with had a 454 casull that started my interest in big revolvers

Why? Revolvers are not cool.

A 32 Federal will absolutely out perform the 9mm in penetration.

357 and 38 special both have better bullet selection than a semi and can easily out perform a 9mm.

I want a Ruger 4.3 inch SP101, not decided on 357 for convenience or 32 Fed though.

My 44 mag S&W mountain gun is Ok with rubber grips, I put some pretty wood on it, and it hurt with heavy 44 mag loads. My 5.5 inch Ruger Toklat 454 is actually more enjoyable to shoot even with heavy loads than the mountain gun, likely due to the grip design and having rubber between my hand and the metal.

I in no way want a scandium 44. A 13.2 oz 357 was the most painful gun I have shot if heavy loads were put in it.

In the woods, I have no interest in barrels under 3.5 inches or over 6. Preference is 4 inches. It you look at the velocity difference between 2 inch and 4 inch barrels, there is quite a bit lost for very little gain in weight and size with snubs.

I had a sp101 with the 4” barrel. It was a really accurate little revolver. Gave it to my son when he moved to Gbear country. Full power 357’s out of that gun were a handful though. To me it was worse than the 329pd. Probably because the grips on the ruger are just too small for me.

I love wheelguns and was handgun hunting obsessed for several years. I’m a .41 Mag aficionado. Smith 57s and 657s and Ruger Blackhawks and RedHawks. My favorite to hunt with is a Ruger Bisley Hunter in 41 mag loaded with 210 A Frames. My favorite recreational shooter is an old 4” heavy barreled Model 10.
