I agree with Matt, I think it’s kind of shady that Sitka is sending people out on $20,000 elk hunts to try and recruit a different demographic. But if they called and wanted to sponsor me on some private land elk hunt I would sure as hell go.
I like the pieces of Sitka clothing that I have and I’m not gonna burn it like some crazy NFL fan. I have clothing pieces from just about everybody though, so there is no brand loyalty anyone
$20k is nothing in an advertising budget. They paid very little to possibly promote to more people. There’s absolutely nothing shady about a company investing in selling their products. That’s just good business sense.

They also invest much more in conservation efforts and in discounts to vets and other military. Those dollars lost do nothing to advertise the product.

I've killed a lot of animals over 500+ yards with "cold bore shots". I didn't even know that was a thing until I read it here. I've also killed quite a few more under 100 yards with my bow and rifle

I would rather shoot something as close as possible, but sometimes they are in a position that getting closer and getting a shot isn't a given. The type of terrain someone is hunting in has a lot to do with how far shots are. Some areas I hunt shots are rarely even 100 yards. But in CO where I hunt, I'm normally above 10,000'. I'd say every other year we shot something around 400 yards, and every 3 or 4, beyond 500.

I'm also a bow hunter.

And I agree with several of you on here. There are a lot of hunters shooting well beyond they're ability.

I've got Sitka, skre, kuiu, woolrich and some other stuff I wear. I buy it on sale and I wear it because it's better than denim. Of course they are profiting, that's the point of business. I listen to Steve's stuff and I agree with some stuff and disagree with some stuff. It's interesting and fun to listen to and it seems lately hes gotten a little more politically conservative than he use to be. Some of his cronies are hard to listen to though. Never listened to Matt so I can't comment.
I used to listen to Steven rinnella... Stopped listening after he stopped advocating for civil disobedience after the BLM riots. I thought it was funny he didn't say it again in the time I listened. Had to stop listening because he is so rude. Like his content otherwise.

Only listening to Matt because he is a bigger trainwreck.

I don’t consider money towards conservation projects “dollars lost”. They could have sent a vet or first responder on the hunt and I still wouldn’t say it was “dollars lost”.
Bank rolling for a famous snowboarder to hunt private land elk is wasted or lost money IMO.

Furthest shot I seen was a 2019 antelope hunt the first day I shot one at 256 yards according to the range finder and my buddy ranging for me It was an easy shot as I had practiced all summer long out to 600 but knew I would not take a shot at that 600-yard distance, second day his turn spotted four goats way over 900 yards coming in to our left kept watching as they worked their way towards where we were glassing from, decided to put a sneak on them by dropping down behind a ridge closed the distance as they also continued to work our way , we moved towards top of the ridge, belly crawled to the top of the ridge and set up at that point they were some 700 yards away, must of watched the goats for 1/2 hour they meandered a bit closer, there was nothing between us and them to use for cover, to close the distance anymore, my buddy said range them it ranged at 600 yards exactly (this was a limit when practicing) Looked at me and ask what ya think, I said go for it when I tell you, at this point I was on the field glasses and told him to take the one out front as he had the bigger horns, He took the shot and I see the bullet splash right over the goats top shoulder behind the goat in the dirt, At that point the antelope started to trot towards us told him to get ready ranged them at 565 yards when they stopped, told him and before I could get glasses on them he shot dead antelope. 300 Win. Mag, 185 gr. Hornady SST bullet, hand load. And no, we weren't being taped for a hunting show that was sponsored by a manufacturer, I do not condone long shots but at this point it was all we had, we did try to close the distance from the start, we could have slung one right from the start and said a hail, Mary. For the average hunter even one who knows his rifle and has the knowledge, practice and skill to pull a long shot we still owe it to the animal to do everything we can to ensure a kill shot first round.

Then you don’t own a business. I do, and anything I donate, any discounts I give, etc. are dollars lost. Some are dollars lost that I’m glad I did. But that doesn’t change the fact that they come out of my bottom line. My account would have more zeroes if I had those dollars so they are “lost” in a business sense. But I’ll still continue to do so as long as it doesn’t cause any hardships for my goals.

I guess it’s good they used their money and not yours then.

Money toward improving habitat, or increasing access is not lost money. If you need a pat on the back or thata boy, that’s your problem not mine.
Same goes for Sitka or anyone else who only does it if it provides clout.

Too funny. So locked in your narrative that you can’t see anything else.

I need no atta boys. My accomplishments, success, and family are my atta boys. My loyalty is to me and mine first. I’ll do what’s best for my circle. My wallet opens where I choose and some guy on a podcast has zero say in that.

If Sitka was looking for a pat on the back they would advertise their contributions, which I’m sure Ol Matt would still find a way to criticize.

My contributions to the things you mention are never advertised and not a point of discussion. But I’m betting they dwarf that of the people screaming the loudest about how someone or some business spends THEIR money. Typically the people who contribute the least have the most to say on the matter. Everyone else just does it “quietly.”

This is pathetic to me. As if the point to getting out and hunting is to gain followers. Yet they throw it in there like it is an accomplishment, right there with getting meat. Basically advertising hunting as a way to get followers.

They’re able to give such good discounts because of a ridiculously high profit margin from outsourcing to Asian countries with terrible working conditions. I’m not convinced that a 40% discount to a few vets, guides, game wardens, etc makes up for all the paychecks they’d provide if their clothes were made here.

This is like when Ray Wylie Hubbard got beat up in Red River, New Mexico.

....before Willie Nelson sang at the Armadillo World Headquarters here in Austin, Texas, bringing the hippies and rednecks together, creating the HipNecks ...
