I was just wondering how many of the 29 North American big game species people think they might actually kill?

I'm thinking, realistically, seven:
Whitetail
Mule deer
Black bear
Rocky Mountain Elk
One Sheep species
Pronghorn
Moose
Maybe 9 (Caribou, Mountain goat)

Walrus and Jaguar ain't looking likely!

It's been my dream to hunt the NA29 since I was a kid, and I'm in a position to start getting serious (from a financial/vacation standpoint). I've also dreamed of doing it with archery equipment. Right now, I'm sitting at only 4 of the 29 (elk, mule deer, whitetail, black bear) but my plan over the next few years is to start scheduling some other species (antelope, mountain goat, mountain lion, caribou are at the top of the list right now over the next few years).

For the record, jaguar/walrus aren't on the list and free range bison is a lot easier to hunt than the sheep species or polar bear (at least from a financial standpoint!). There's some neat documentation out there on completing the Slam. Tom Miranda's video series and accompanying book are really good (I love his approach and attitude). Chuck Adams has a good book on completing the Slam. Jake Ensign also has a good summary of his Slam over on Bowsite (http://www.bowsite.com/BOWSITE/features/articles/jakes29/).

I'm reading Chucks "Super Slam" right now, having just completed "Life at Full Draw". Hope to review each on the Rok Blog, but can already say they are worth the read if you're in the pursuit of a SS.

A lofty goal for sure. I am hoping to hunt for 15, with a bow, for now... If I get them, great... If not, that is fine too, at least I tried. Totally possible as I have 8 and the 7 I feel I have a chance to get and bring me to my goal of 15 will all be hunted over the next few years. In 4-5 years I will see where I am at and go from there. The only motivation I have to accomplish this (the animals I wish to hunt) is soley based on the adventure it will create and the experiences along the way...

I should add that "crossing an animal off of a list" or "knocking" this and that out, are not why I hunt and never will be why I hunt. I set attainable goals with consideration to my wife, my job and my financial situation. Then, I do my best to put myself in a position to achieve those goals.

Realistically I'd like to get the super 10. More so for the experience of hunting different species than to be able to say I did it. If I don't reach it that's fine to. Don't want to put so much pressure on myself to the point were its no longer fun.

Steve,

You are getting me fired up! These next several years are going to be incredible. You've had some great success up here in AK. Doing things some will only dream of.

I have this same dream as well. I am not in a finacial state/vacation to accomplish most of those yet but I am going to try my damndest. Currently I only have a mule deer and black bear for archery. Rifle is a different story, black bear, elk, mule deer, antelope, and I am sure I am missing some. It's so hard to get some of the species on that list unless you have budget that allows. I will keep dreaming and living vicariously through you all who post pictures.

There are only a select flew I won't pursue due to money. I have already taken whitetail, caribou, blacktail, and pronghorn. Will be hunting moose, mule deer, elk, antelope, and black bear this fall.

Realistically ill eventually be able to hunt All of the NA29 except Tule elk, stone sheep, desert bighorn, the other 4 caribou (just no interest), Canadian moose. Just no interest in some of the Canadian species and can't afford those two sheep. I can see taking all others with archery and adding wild hogs, alligator, and wolf to the list. I'm only 23 and should be an Alaskan resident inside of 3 years so many species should become target opportunities soon.

Thanks Bigeasy. The list on the official site has walrus and jaguar as an "auxiliary" category, I guess just bonus?

It never crossed my mind until I drew and filled a Tule elk tag. I'd be happy killing elk in 11 different states.

I'd like to kill all 3 species of elk in California.

But first I want to hunt all the States West of the 100th parallel.

More realistic for me would be a representative slam, where you take on species of each group.

My goal is colorado's "big 8" with archery tackle. Maybe the "big 10" if I luck into a moose and desert sheep tag, so far in my goal (archery) I am 0/8!

I just finished reading Tom Miranda's Adventure Bowhunting book and have to say, after reading it, I'm totally turned off by the idea of some artificially created bunch of critters qualifying someone as having accomplished something "super". I'm not typically a negative guy who shoots down accomplishments of others, but the amount of self-promotion in that book and the amount of promotion of the idea that killing those animals was "super" was just too much for me to handle. Don't get me wrong- it was super! However, with page after page of he breaking his arm patting his back and trumping up the accomplishment as being something other-than-this-worldly, it really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I want to be a good whitetail and mule deer hunter, a great elk hunt, and shoot a bunch more animals with my bow. Other than that, I'm hoping to accomplish the "mediocre 10", which is an artifically created accomplishment that I will now trump up as being something truly special. On Fri night I hope to be the sole member of my family to knock down a 6-pack of Coors Light and four pieces of pizza! Accomplishing this won't make me special or better than everyone else (which is how it differs from the super slam)- it'll just make me continue to be a normal dude who loves to hunt and who took Fri night off to relax.

My goal is to arrow the Colorado big 8 native animals. I am at 6. I need a bighorn and a Mtn goat to have completed it. Maybe add a moose to mix. But other than that, that is all I will prob kill as I am too poor to hunt out of Colorado.
