2019 crew cab 4WD SR5, 6 foot bed. I only have about 70,000 miles on it. it has plenty of power for what I need to do with it. I’ve towed this trailer maybe 5 to 7000 miles, don’t even notice it’s back there. Trailer is about 1300 pounds. It’s my work truck and I treat it like a wheelbarrow other than doing the required maintenance. I’m pretty happy with it. I get about 20–22 mpg. Towing the trailer at 75 I get about 18. I have a heavy foot. View attachment 553976

I haven't hear many good things about the brand new Tacomas. I would lean towards the Tundra.

I am on my 2nd Tacoma. My first was a 2008 with only 5,000 miles on it and I traded that in with 160,000+ on it in January of 2019. I got 13,500 for it with a Ranch cap. It was a Sport trim package and I loved it. My 2019 has just over 19,000 miles on it now, working from home since March 2020 has helped a lot! The local dealer keeps offering $38,000 to trade it in on a 2023. Ummm... "No".

I just do not think you can go wrong with a Tacoma. I was hard on my first, lots of rutted, ice frozen service roads in norther PA in timber/gas well country... muddy and sloppy fields and more for waterfowl setups and a mess of stuff in between did require all four ball joints to be replaced between 120,000 and 150,000 miles. Love my truck and see no reason to get another for several years to come. If you like it, buy it.

A Tundra would be a nice upgrade if you are going to be hunting out of it, just can't argue with more square inches of storage and hauling power. But you are going to pay for that upgrade. Hard to go wrong with a Tacoma, get the off-road upgrades and don't be have any guilt over it.

I would buy a used Nissan Frontier for around $15k with somewhere around 120k miles. You could drive it for another 100k miles, replace the engine and transmission if you had to, and still spend under $30k. There is not a chance in hell I'm paying $40k for a midsized truck.

The new Tundras start at $55k if you want 4x4….
That's why I started looking at used ones about 6 months ago. I don't like their redesign at all, nor the idea of a 3.5L twin turbo, or the $60k+ price tag, and I don't like any of the 5.5 foot bed trucks. I finally pulled the trigger on a 1-owner 2016 Tundra double cab SR5 TRD with 53k miles for just over $30k. I paid barely double what I paid for my 1989 Toyota xtracab 4x4 with the V6 brand new 34 years ago. I figured that was a pretty fair deal. And since it was a good deal I went ahead and got the Platinum extended warranty for 7 years for another $2500.

I drove it about 60 miles on the highway at 80-85 and the computer showed 17.4mpg average. I can deal with that. That's right in the ball park of what my F-350 gets doing the same speeds.

At 6'6" I can't fit in the Tacoma's very well since they made the cabs shorter, windows smaller, and windshield lower. But the Tundra has a good amount of room.

All personal preference but no way in hell I'd spend that much on a Tacoma. They are so uncomfortable to me, couldn't even imagine being stuck in that torture chamber from Seattle to North Dakota.

I have had a 19 TRD OR for a little over a year. Had a 21 Sierra for a year and traded it in for what I paid for it. I have always wanted a Tacoma, but having owned it a year, I'm fairly lukewarm. The power thing I have mostly gotten used to, but still noticeable. My biggest gripe is interior space. I'm 6'1" and have the seat pretty much all the way back, which leaves basically no floorboard space behind me, definitely not enough room for an adult. We have a 2 year old and his car seat is still rear facing and my wife hates riding with me cause of how far forward the passenger seat is. We have another kid on the way, so may figure out quick the taco has to go. Hopefully we can make it work, but may have to go back to full size.

Gonna beat this dead horse a little more. I had 2 of the newer model tacomas. I went from an F150 to a Tacoma for the same reasons you are. My buddy has a 2013 manual with the 4.0 that is solid, so I thought I’d be happy. Bought a 2017 Tacoma (2nd year of the latest generation) that spent its entire life in the Toyota shop. I went through 2 rear axles and 4 sets of rear brake drums before Toyota bought it back from me full price. Figuring I had a lemon I bought a 2018 TRD OR only to have the same issues. Toyota gave me loaner Tacomas to drive while mine were in the shop. They’re great off road, no one will argue that. But getting to the dirt road is the pain. The engine is constantly in high RPMs and in lower gears to get up hills. I never used cruise control because it would shift all over the place. The seats sit very low to the floor board, it was uncomfortable for me. I went back to an F150 and am happy. I know people love them and more power to them, but going from a F150 with a large(r) displacement engine to the 3.5 in the Tacoma just wasn’t for me.

And you’ll probably miss the cab space.

My wife and I laugh about how we’d be so uncomfortable now if I’d have kept my Tacoma. And we only have one kid, but kids need a lot of shit.

i had a 2021 TRD OR DCLB and traded it in after a week. felt like a civic with a trunk coming from a titan. no power. seat angle hurt my knee and back. plus the f150 i switched to got way better gas mileage. i had a killer deal, couple grand under msrp but still wasn't worth it to me.wife happier too with more room for the carseat in the back seat

I'd get a used tundra from teh last five years with low miles (might have to drive) or get a bare bones new tundra ordered

Really considering changing my mind after hearing from all of these unhappy tacoma owners….reliability is the most important thing for me and it sounds like the Gen 3 may not be as bulletproof as previous generations.

Might look into the Frontier if I can find one with a 6ft bed.

Even the previous generations had problems. It's just that there's such a love for the 'lifted on 35s with extra lighting for traffic' look.

Ive had a 3rd gen for 6 years now. Gets from A to B comfortably. I think I paid $31k new for TRD package

It’s been great. No problems besides the windshields I’ve cracked

Another longtime owner here. I have the 2015. If guys are crying about it being gutless, they are pissed cause they can't drive 90 on I70 from a standstill at eisenhower. Fine.

But I've had ZERO problems, and I've rode it hard and put it away wet. They are just tanks. I paid full price, drove it off the lot and straight to a 4x4 shop for new shocks and tires and rockbars. Drove it to AK and it's still kicking ass.

I am sure it will be a twin turbo 4 cyl. I sold a Ram a couple weeks ago with the intent of replacing it with a new tundra or tacoma. And then I started reading reviews of the redesigned tundra and they are awful. Car and driver just had long term review that noted over heating transmissions and very poor fuel economy.

I ended up finding a 2020 Tundra with 10k miles on it. I am 6’5” and the tacoma was just not as comfortable as the Tundra.
Impossible! Toyotas don’t do that. Only ford, chevy, and dodge does that.
