Who's fault is that? They're living in the state that passed a freaking ballot initiative to reintroduce wolves. Who do you think will kill more elk, Joe blow from back east or established wolf packs?
I know whose fault it is. The 51% who voted for it. You brought up the wolves, not me. Certainly the wolves will kill more than Joe Blow from back east, OK, or CO. Seemed like you were going down the path of if you can't have it, neither should the residents. Unless there is another way to read "90/10 split makes me hope they drop some wolves in your favorite elk spot 😂".

I think right now the split for some draw units is 65/35 while some others are 80/20, both are very generous for NR compared to most other states. It's no secret that everyone who hunts OTC in CO complains about the overcrowding, R and NR both. It's also no big secret that all OTC will be gone next year or the year after, the CO Game Commission has pretty much said this. CO residents realize they are about to get what they have been asking for and are now making a last ditch effort to keep some OTC tags for themselves. I'm just curious if some units will keep OTC private land tags.

Don't get me wrong I'm a NR and all for OTC going away. I told my son just today if it keeps going the way it is one day we will be one the guys not able to find elk.

Correct, General Units and Limited Entry Units. I've applied in most western states' limited entries for years, no problem with NR hunters but residents should be able to hunt their home state otc in a general unit.
Im not up on all the states regulations, believe that CO and WY already/currently allow OTC Res hunting.

The thing here is that CO Res want to end the OTC NR hunting - limit the NR. What these guys want is tv show quality hunting and feel they deserve it for a $25 OTC tag.

Reality sux and they will continue to play victim. That’s why they’ll turn on eachother. It is inevitable.

I don’t think that is the case or that guys think we will get “hunting show quality” I think anyone who grew up here knows things have gotten out of hand over the last 6 years and we need to address the situation. But if you wonder how a Wyoming general tag is vs a current Co Otc tag it is basically hunting show quality to a small town rodeo when you compare the two

”Entitlement” seems to be one of the majors themes here. Some of the arguments for that entitlement are very sound and reasonable, others not so much. If you think you are exceptionally entitled because you are the only state with $900k houses, high tax bills, high oil and energy costs etc etc etc, I am guessing you haven’t left the state much. That’s virtually the case in most states across the US, many way way higher than yours. That $900k house was worth $500k just a few years ago. Inflation is brutal for ALL and the cost of something now has little true value. And all those taxes you all are paying, it’s not to subsidize the NRs expenses when we come to visit. It’s to help subsidize your fellow low earning income Coloradans and pay for your states governmental agendas.

Residents should get some preferential treatment. I don’t disagree. Ever been to Florida or Hawaii to name a few, NR get charged more for entertainment, housing, car rentals, food etc at many places. It’s not all that uncommon. There are, and should be perks for being a resident of that state. Question is where do we draw the line?

I am a NR and admit an unlimited free for all on OTC bull tags seems ridiculous. It always has. However it’s still lets ALL who want to hunt, hunt, resident and non resident alike. So the argument that OTC units gives residents less opportunities cannot be the reason. Maybe the true argument is that over crowding and OTC has caused you to be “less successful” and/or the bulls harvested “aren’t all wall hangers” or less quality trophy bulls are seen. Will limiting NR tags either via OTC or drawn tags, improve those odds or expectations. It may or it may not. But to think all units will now have so few hunters you won’t ever run into another hunter, that each unit will house massive herds with multiple 350” class bull isn’t likely going to happen either. It’s not going to turn into some hunting wonderland. And the economic impact that will have to be recaptured anew, likely by the Resident paying more since the NR is no longer in the picture.

Curious what the true goal of said petition is trying to accomplish and if it actually will accomplish it. Too many unknowns for me to choose a side, even as a NR.

As they should why should resident hunters be over run with nr that didn't draw a tag in another state so they all flock to colorado

Montana and Idaho also have otc for residents and capped nr tags why shouldn't colorado also? If you going to throw numbers around at least do a little research resident colorado elk tag is 60 not 25.

There has not been one person asking for $25 tags on this thread, not sure where you pulled that number from. In fact several people have expressed that they would pay many times more than the current tag price to make up for the cut to NR tags... and I share that line of thinking.

Speaking for myself as a CO Resident. I don't expect tv show quality hunting. I would be ecstatic with the quality we had 10-15 years ago, where we were happy killing raghorn bulls, but atleast we got into elk and heard a few bugles.

I pay to play in AZ, NM, UT, WY, etc. and I'm lucky as a NR of those states if I see double digit NR quotas, most all are in the single digits. As a NR of those states I believe that is fair, I am not planning to hunt those states every single year, I have short, medium and long term hunt goals and I play each draw system accordingly.

So why should I accept the fact that my home state is giving out 2-3X the next highest wester states NR quota (that's where there is a quota, OTC numbers are much higher)? Hell, I wouldn't feel right even suggesting any other western state to up their NR quota to 20%-25%, so why do CO residents have to be the only western state to accept that?

Non residents have got to have their cake and eat it too all these years. They've been able to apply in all the western states and still hunt elk every single year on OTC colorado elk tags. And now they want to throw a fit when the residents who have been watching our elk numbers plummet finally have enough and ask for unlimited OTC to go away and there to be some sort of CAP or quota in place, and god forbid that quota be on par with all other western states NR quotas.. You say it's the residents that are playing victim?? That's cute..

MOST SERIOUS NR'S WHO HUNT COLORADO WOULD BE OK WITH BUYING THEIR OTC TAG DURING A CAP WINDOW DURING THE PRIMARY DRAW. ITS THE LAST MINUTE "HEY I WANT TO GO HUNT ELK BECAUSE I DIDNT DRAW ANY OTHER STATE " GUYS THAT ARE THE ONES HAVING HEARTBURN WITH THE SITUATION.

What Floridians want is TV show quality fishing and feel they deserve it for a $32.50 license.

I even noticed there are licenses for Snook and Spiny Lobster that are for residents only, maybe we should do that for elk in CO.

Sorry but you got to be realistic about it, Colorado can't survive on Resident license money alone.

I can add up all the licesenses I purchase in a year and it won't add up to a NR Deer license, let alone an Elk license.

I definitely want NR to have the opportunity to hunt here and OTC is the easiest way, at least it keeps resident prices lower.

The snook and spiny lobster things are "stamps" - same price for everyone. You pay the same as i do and get the same limit. The fishing is going downhill, like your hunting is. If you visit i can get you on some fish but am not able to call what we will catch and where like i used to. Lotsa folks...

FL does not limit the amount of NR hunting - you apply for the same quota as I do. If you really wanted to hunt the OTC areas (we call em romp & stomp), you are welcome to do so - I don't do that cause the hunting is just an exercise in "going" and the odds of success are way, way low.

@RaggedHunter @Hnthrdr @Archer86

I'm actually not attacking the process, just predicting it. Did take some artistic license in the writing. Was a simple way to express an idea, not formulate an attack. You-all want it to be the way it was. Not overrun with NR hunters.

And yes - you guys are the dumping ground for all the guys who can't wait another year to hunt and been turned down by all the other states,

I've been involved in similar situation and it was all about duck hunting - you want to see some nasty folks, find some duck hunters who are losing their opportunity.

Being emotionally invested just helps show what I'm talking about. It robs the logic out of things and folks do stuff they wouldn't do if not emotionally charged.

I'm getting out of the western NR hunting game.
I'll be in WY this fall, burning some antelope points and then never to return. You guys owe me nothing and I owe you nothing. I just don't think it is worth fretting over and worrying about where to go, getting a permit, all the travel, and then worrying about the local yokels getting even w the NR on my car.

It isn't gonna end or get easier - the emotion you have for change is gonna fuel some nastiness.

As a NR I do think that residents should be OTC. But I also think that residents want to limit NR too much. And the argument that I keep hearing over and over is "all the other western states do it this way". Comparing Colorado to other states isn't apples to apples. If Colorado wants to be like other western states maybe they need to get 1500 wolves like Idaho and 2000 grizzly bears like Montana, have no lion hunting like California and then get down to a elk population of 74,000 like Utah.

My point is that Colorado is a state that's not like other states and should be treated as such.

I’d be surprised if it happens. The amount of money the NR brings to the state far outweighs the Residents. That’s too much to give away. If they raise the prices to make it difference. Most of the Residents won’t pay the price. Just my opinion.

I love watching children fight in the sandbox.
you guys are silly, stomp your feet, cry, get what you want then cry you don't want it.
throw #'s out there but never actually read those #'s
how long are you western guys going to blame everything on NR?
Come join the resident club of 900k houses, high gas prices, high taxes, bad traffic, etc etc for 365 days and tell me how great that 60 dollar tag is. My property insurance has gone up 1000 dollars a year 3 years in a row! The county just told me the value of my property is 280k higher, yes 280k than the last time it was assessed for taxes a year or 2 ago . I can’t wait for that tax bill!

Your 200 dollars in groceries, 50 dollars at McDonald’s and 150 dollars in gas isn’t keeping economies thriving. Sorry to burst your bubble.
really? first, you can thank cali. for all that, it's got nothing to do with NR hunters. second, its nice you want to look at it small scale but the reality is that without NR hunters many small businesses will shut down. its always fun to play victim and think only of yourself, but others rely on that 200$ and unless you're willing to pay their mortgage I wouldn't use any of this as an argument.

to use the famous go to line from every CO res. "if you don't like it you can always move out"

Nobody is blaming anybody, it’s reality. Whether it’s california, nonresidents, or aliens from mars it is what it is.

Which town in Colorado would “go under” without nonresidents? Meaning, shops would close down, etc? I’ll wait for your answer…

Was curious about budgets

CO wildlife budget 21-22 198 million
Mt 2021 102 million
WY 2020 89 million
ID 2020 124 million

Acknowledging we have many more residents and not looking at amount of land managed, there is probably some fat to be trimmed.
