Petition - OTC for Colorado Residents

I like the idea but I’m also prepared to pay $300 for a tag instead of the $60 it is now. Like it or not non-res hunters pay 12.6x as much as residents and the money has to come from somewhere.

That being said, all OTC tags should have to be bought before May 31. Plan ahead or miss out, that’d help with overcrowding.

As a CO resident I’d be happy to take equity w ID, WY, and MT residents. I pay to play there. I would love a general tag that lets me hunt archery and rifle. The petition is a menial ask.

If this is true, I can't wait to see how hard it is to get a NR archery elk tag. What does this do to the elk population? I have no clue how the actual license sale vs harvest rate effects the conservation status quo. Seems that the population would go up if there are less licenses issued. And if the current amount of hunters/harvest rate is keeping the population regulated, what will CPW do to keep the current status quo? More wolves? Grizzly reintroduction?

I understand the frustration a lot of folks have with crowding on the mountain, but isn't conservation more about controlling the amount of animals? BTW, I'm referring to elk, not deer or other critters.
That’s exactly what’s happening. Though the petition sounds good to residents, it also sounds good to the tree hugging liberals. Elk populations will sky rocket. Newly regulated hunter numbers won’t be able to manage the elk herd populations, which is an issue already thats getting worse in some units. Locals are already complaining there’s too many elk. Politicians will have an easy ask from the public for wolf introductions. “If the human hunters can’t keep it in check the predators will”.….at least that’s their thought”less” process.

I love these threads. The fact that OTC CO has existed for so long says a lot about the habitat quality at a minimum of those landscapes. As a MT resident I am all for CO state residents wanting to exercise some moderation into the management of their resources. I will enjoy being in CO in a couple weeks for work, taking advantage of the public lands we as US residents all cherish. I also know the difference between the rights (or make-believe rights) to a resource vs the right to utilize our shared property.

anyone want to help write one of these petitions up and distribute for the Non Residents ?
I would be happy to sign a petition to say that nr tags need to have a cap you can't have nr hunters from every state hunting colorado when they don't get a tag in another state and expect the resource not to suffer.

Bull hunting doesn’t regulate elk populations. Cow harvest does. The elk population isn’t going to skyrocket based on this proposal.

Agreed. Another theory too. Maybe with less hunters the harvest rate gets above 10%. It is certainly plausible that less hunters kill nearly as many elk without the pressure. Maybe not, but I'm sure willing to give it a try :) If herds need managing, I agree that cow harvest is the way. With wolves coming we certainly can't sustain the hunter numbers.

I think we should have a petition for in state residents to pay the same fee as out of state residents when they hunt on Federally owned lands.
I'd be all for raising the resident fees in NM to stop the 15 people in a family applying for grandma's grandpa's and little kids who's tag will be hunted by a chosen family member while the rest of the family sits in camp until its time to go notch the tag.......and yes im a resident.......

You’re wasting your time. Some people just don’t get it. You can hike and camp in national forest all you want. If you want to hunt animals, OWNED AND MANAGED BY THE STATE, you have to play by the states rules. It’s a simple concept, but for some reason it’s just too difficult for people to understand.

But but but in Xxxx state in the east non residents can buy 10 white tail tags for the same price as residents!

OK, I think I have the answers to solve everything. we keep OTC for everyone but
1) res. get otc in the quality units and there is no draw for non res. in those units
2) non res keep otc but only on federal land.
3) all other units are draw for everyone
4) all otc units are capped equally

petition that
