I was on another forum last night and someone was selling 5.7 ammo for $70 a box. This kind of scalping just irritates me. I have quite a stock of ammo, not as much as i would like more than a lot of people. But i hate to see people buying ammo at those prices. the guys scalping should be ashamed of themselves. but i am sure they have morals or spine anyway. I did put a message on his post saying he should be ashamed of himself and got a nasty gram from said forum. But worth it, if for no other reason than to make myself feel better. In all this i have not sold ammo to anyone for more than i have bought it for and most of the time just give it to those who need it with the instruction when you find some you pay me back. The same with anything else people need. Grrrr just irritates me to no end people blowing up prices on things In this way. Hope you all have a great day.

It's unfortunate but it's supply and demand. Those that are prepared and have gone through a cycle or two always know to stock up.

Same thing happens with fuel, cars/trucks, houses and so on. No one calls it scalping though if they are on the winning side.

If it's overpriced ("gouged") then people won't pay for it if they don't need it. If they need it badly they will pay for it.

I myself paid up for a couple boxes of ammo before last season. Did it hurt? Yes. But I also needed it and was willing to pay. I learned a lesson to buy more ammo when prices go down because there will be another panic buy in a few years

If the government had complete control, we wouldn’t have to worry about these things.
We'd have worse problems than expensive ammo 😁

OP yeah its frustrating as all get out but it is what it is. I agree with you 100% but the issue is where do you draw the line between what is considered price gouging and just supply and demand? Its a tough situation all around. Its wrong and theres a reason the government fines businesses who do it during natural disasters. Charging $30 for a case of water after a hurricane levels a city is just morally incomprehensible.

Buyers set the price, not the seller.

I just sold a car for nearly the same price I paid 4 years ago after I put on 60K miles. Should I have sold it for a few grand less? Owned my house for about 2 years and I'm seriously thinking about selling that for a 35% profit as well.

For Elk I shoot 300 win. mag. Barnes 180 gn. ttsx. If you can find it, plan on paying $120.00 for twenty. It's what the market will bare. After what guys spend on an Elk hunt that is an insignificant cost.

So, I see a difference between things I bought to use and decide to sell later because I can make money on it and someone who makes themself a middle man by buying ammo at the store with the intent of selling it to people who could have just gone to the same store (i.e. their being a middle man adds no value).

The first is a free market working how it should, the latter is effectively market manipulation and gums up the supply chain. At the small scale level we are talking about, there simply is not much to be done about it beyond our own individual decisions and encouraging others to make similar decisions.

This is a case where systemic treatment would be worse than the disease.

I see my shot I took at being funny was misunderstood.
If someone was willing to pay and I had a surplus, I’d sell for a profit.
While selling 8 pounds of powder for a 1000 bucks is outrageous to some, obviously the purchaser just had to have it.
If people stopped paying insane amounts then this stuff stops.

Haha no I got ya. 👍 I wouldn't have replied every thread that gets political on here usually turns sideways.... you pretty much just described the housing market to a T.

The housing market is freaking nuts in my area. Half million for a 3 bed 2 bath on the crappy side of town.

If you're up for a challenge to your preconceived notions, here's a good explanation of the legitimate economic role of the much-maligned "middleman": https://mises.org/library/24-middleman

The op is thinking pure socialist and many other folks think the same way. Houses can sell for crazy $ and that's OK with those folks but a box of ammo that they need is different.
