No USPS gun ship

I sold 3 rifles on gunbroker last month and shipped all three to FFL's via USPS. No issues. UPS and FedEx won't let an individual ship a long gun of any kind, BUT I had a rifle go back to Weatherby and they supplied the Fedex label and there were no issues with me dropping it off. Weatherby then sent the rifle back to me directly the same way. Same thing with a CVA wolfe a couple years ago.

Maybe it's a change to USPS that hasn't been published as of yet.

I've never had an issues sending scopes via Fedex or UPS, but I will use USPS 99% of the time, they're 5 minutes from me. The nearest Fedex and UPS drop off's are 20 minutes away.

I had a post office argue with me about shipping a muzzleloader, which isn't a firearm. Took it to a different post office and told them it was an antique.

I had fed ex and UPS folks tell me they wouldn't ship ammo. If you set up a pick up with UPS then you can ship ammo, just have to declare it properly.

If you're shipping to an FFL then they'll perform a background check so I'm not sure why they wouldn't let you ship it. I have a local gun shop that will box and ship a rifle for $50 so it's worth not dealing with the hassle.

I just shipped one via USPS today with no issues. I’m a non FFL but sent it to an out of state FFL. USPS employee had a bunch of questions and was a little apprehensive at first but it went through without issue once I pulled up their regulations that have been posted in this thread a couple times.

Their laminated rules behind the counter also confirmed the regulations that I just mentioned.

If you need to educate the USPS postal worker, definitely do it. Don't give up. It's literally their duty to ship as long as you meet the USPS official requirements. Call for the manager if necessary and make it happen...in the nicest possible way of course. :-)

I didn’t make this point in my other posts in this thread. This is absolutely correct. No guns at a store, even to and from a licensed dealer.
Update and either an apparent change of policy, or more likely, it's dependent upon which UPS Store you visit.

Today I went to my giant mega-UPS hub to ship a rifle to TBAC for threading. TBAC prepared and provided the label, and I went to the hub because it was a "UPS Customer Center" (which I thought was the only way for me to ship). That center is now permanently closed. (I learned by a sign on the door.)

So I called the closest UPS Store and explained the situation and they said "no problem - come by." Since my box was already sealed and I had the label, they didn't care. I even said "hey, you pulled up the record by scanning the label, so maybe it's already in there - but I'm declaring this is a firearm. Do you need anything else?" UPS box store guy: "Nope. Since it's already packaged up and you have a label, it doesn't matter to us."

I reported back to TBAC and they said that sometimes particular UPS Stores get squirrelly, maybe due to ignorance or personal concerns, and won't accept firearms. Good idea then to phone them in advance. And since I figured I was also ignorant, I found this from the UPS site - "Shippers with an approved Firearm Products agreement may provide a shipping label to customers who need to return Firearm Products to the shipper (or to another address as agreed upon between UPS and the shipper). Customers may drop off pre-labeled and packed packages at UPS Customer Centers or The UPS Store locations or schedule a pickup with UPS. Shippers are responsible for ensuring that such packages comply with UPS’s requirements and all applicable laws.

Yes, it's not as good as when you could be the "shipper" but better than at least what I thought the policy was before.

The best way I've found is handing it off to the UPS driver. I don't have a UPS store within 40 minutes of me, and with how bad USPS has been I've been chasing down UPS trucks for anything I'm shipping of value, ie the Manners stock I sold this week. I print a label through ShipStation and insure it there.

Can you do that with a firearm?

They don't care what's in the box. Done it probably 25 times with firearms. No different than scheduling a pickup. Haven't read the whole thread, but in addition USPS has never gave me any pushback on dropping off long guns at the post office either. Just hate using them because they are always late.

You may wanna verify the insurance terms you are buying. At least on my ship station account the insurance is through parcelguard and not UPS, parcelguard explicitly states firearms won't be covered. You may be/have been paying for an insurance that would deny you coverage.

Thanks! Will def look into that.

You can't hand a firearm to a UPS driver unless you have an account with them specifically to ship firearms. At least you can't if you're following their policies. If you're using a third party to pay for UPS shipping of firearm that's a different deal altogether and you'd better figure out what they do and don't allow. When UPS was allowing individuals to ship guns none of the UPS Stores I had around me would take them. FedEX stores continued to allow it for a while but now require you to ship from one of their hub stations.

USPS doesn't care as long as it's not a handgun.

Fwiw, in my situation today, it fit within the exception of TBAC being the shipper, not me. But I erred on the side of making sure it had been declared. (Not that the store guy cared or did anything as a result.)
