The reason I didn't go with the smaller motor is the maintenance. The dealer told me that the turbo was very finicky for very clean oil (far shorter oil change intervals) in the Eco-boosts. I opted for the 5.0.

My local Ford dealer has me on 5000 mile oil changes which was the same as my Tundra.

I have a 2019 with the 3.5 and the 10 speed transmission. Was getting 20+ MPG with the stock tires... 35's and a leveling kit dropped it significantly. Averaging 16.5 MPG now. I would be interested to know how the 2.7 is affected by the bigger tires. I am like others and enjoy power. I only tow occasionally and it is usually a 4 seat side by side. In my opinion the pickup has more than enough power for almost any towing but the draw back is the weight that keeps it from towing something heavy comfortably. If the 2.7 has somewhat comparable power to the 3.5 and gets better gas mileage than I don't see why it wouldn't be a great option.

I love my 2.7 eco. Towed my Mazda back home from the dealership after buying it and averaged 18mpg doing 70 the whole way. Pulled like it wasnt really there and had plenty of passing power too.

Doing 7 hour jaunts from MO to CO i was getting 22-24mpg doing 75+.

I had a major issue with the 2.7. Timing chain stretch, which the resolution was to replace the engine, the dealer didn't recommend just a chain/gear/tensioner replacement. New engine was $12,000 so I traded it in and cut my losses.

anyone looking at the 2021 with the new hybrid/generator? It will be my first truck so I'd like as many opinions as possible.

I have an 18 with the 2.7, I love the truck and engine. I average slightly over 20 mpg, but I’m heavy on the gas, I love hearing the twin turbos roar. It had more power than I need for day to day stuff. I almost had to tow my buddies 1500 Silverado on a 14 foot car trailer, which would have pushed her hard. Towing my 1600 pound Polaris ranger on the 14ft car trailer is a breeze. How’s great, and going up hill it’s got way more than enough left over. I average about 18mpg hauling that 3500 pounds, but I’m lighter in the gas towing. If you don’t plan on hauling over 5000 pounds regularly go with the 2.7, you won’t be disappointed!

I just had a 3.5 as a loaner from the dealership. It got 12mpg which I thought was horrible. I hated the truck a lot. It broke down on us when we were out to dinner one night. I was happy to have the Volvo SUV they switched it out for.

All this and I am a die hard Ford guy

Good truck, good motor for every day use and light towing. I switched to a power stroke for towing a camper and boat though in the mountains. I found, no matter the truck or brand, they must do the tow rating tests at sea level on flat ground- because at 95 degrees, 10k feet and 6% grade, none of them are as advertised. I will say this though, my neighbor has a small camper and had the 1500 Chevy, he traded for the f150 and said it’s night and day in the mountains towing.

Can't speak for anything but ram and jeep, but I see them testing literally 2x everyday in the montains of S Nevada.

Go with the 3.5 Twin Turbo. Awesome throttle response, It has loads of power and pulls like a beast and still gets awesome fuel mileage without towing anything. Averaged 21.5 with 300 lbs of equipment in the box today over 400 mi (no wind). The 2.7 is a good little pickup but lacks power when towing and ppl I know that have had them say the tend to sound like a “vacuum” while running.

He said it's night and day, but which one is which? Did he think the Ford towed better or the Chevy towed better in the Mountains?

Did they explain the reasoning on why? That seems a bit drastic...

they would not warrantee anything less, said replacing the gear, chain and tensioner set may last 6 yrs or 6 weeks. This is from the Ford shop.

Ohhhh, I gotcha, you wanted a warranty... it had nothing to do with the actual feasibility of the repair then. I was thinking there was some quirk with the engine that would have caused it be trashed or not able to be replaced. How much was just the chain, etc. replacement if you recall?

I bought a leftover 2019 in February with the 3.5 and so far I really like it. I pulled a 5500lb trailer from Indiana across the continental divide and back this summer and it pulled great. The mpg was around 10 for the trip.
