I appreciate people putting out content because it's hard to do the amount of filming needed AND hunt. I've tried a couple of times and just hated the process. Like in fishing, if there's a hot bite, I'm not putting down my rod to fiddle with a camera and set up shots to the point where I rarely even take pictures anymore. For the most part there is amazing stuff being generated by professionals and amateurs and I've enjoyed some videos that were really well done. There are a lot of cliches (and "mistakes" isn't the right word, but laziness I guess?) I see repeated a lot in these videos.
Driving montage. We get it, you had to get there somehow.
Sound editing: this is a tough one probably, but I'll be watching a vid and have to turn the sound way up to hear whispers over the wind noise and then they cut to a bugle sequence that rattles my windows. Wind noise is tough to deal with I know, but add subtitles or otherwise reduce the sound level.
Rapid jump cuts: hate 'em.
Muzak: I understand the need to put this in there to cover over the montage of splicing together a bunch of 1-5 second clips and slow motion and other fancy shots.
Telling and not showing: I understand this one, too. It's hard to always have the camera on when it's 4-5 hours of boredom punctuated by 30 seconds of action. But Rinella said it best when talking about their Afognak bear encounter not being mentioned on the show: If it's not on video, it didn't happen.
All that said, the shot of some tool in a brooding pose looking out across the valley as a philosophical quote is read is an absolute stoppage for me. You Googled inspirational quotes and slapped it into your film...you're trying too hard. If you want to say how much a hunt means to you, right on! Just use your own words please.
This too.
There is a ton of content being generated and it's hard to stand out in a crowd. There's a reason a lot of traditional hunting shows were/are filmed on ranches and high fences. They had to take out as many variables as they could since filming a show is expensive. Folks that put together solid shows are really putting in the effort.
