I don't watch very many at all. Intro music is fine. Whispering and I shut it off, either narrate the film or let me figure out what's going on.
I get that people want to make a living doing what they love, but hunting to me is being alone in the mountains.

I'm not terribly offended by music unless it's obnoxiously loud or corny.

Worse offenders are guys with shaky video, bad microphones resulting in hard-to-hear conversations, and videos that are 10 minutes but should be about two minutes long.

Intro music is ok but nothing during the video itself. What annoys me just as much is when the hunter just rambles on and won't shut up, almost like it turns into a tutorial more than a hunt.

I have to back track on my earlier post.... I think the videos that NWT Artic Red River guide Ben Stourac puts up on YouTube with music are some great hunting videos... Actually they are some my absolute favorites !!

Appropriate music in a well produced film is hardly noticeable to me. IMO it should fill the narration voids during b-roll only other than intro music for a show or series. If it opens with Flatbill metro country, I am probably out before the truck they are showing the inside of turns off the pavement.

The amount of non-field b-roll is actually a bigger negative to me than a lot of the music.

Situation appropriate music doesn't bother me. Kuiu does a good job in my opinion on their films of keeping the music reasonable. I liked Randy Newberg's sheep hunt in the Wrangells without any music at all just as well.

Really enjoyed TMP sheep hunt series but they spent almost the first two shows getting ready to hunt, a little overkill but not horrible. Stuck in the Rut does a good job of getting right down to the business of hunting. Ben Stourac does a good job of getting right down to business too.

Dudes crying on film didn't really bother me until the BRO guys made it mainstream, now it's everywhere. I can understand the emotion on certain meaningful hunts but crying over a high fence whitetail seems to be common these days.

All that said, the shot of some tool in a brooding pose looking out across the valley as a philosophical quote is read is an absolute stoppage for me. You Googled inspirational quotes and slapped it into your film...you're trying too hard. If you want to say how much a hunt means to you, right on! Just use your own words please.

A fix back east
I appreciate people putting out content because it's hard to do the amount of filming needed AND hunt. I've tried a couple of times and just hated the process. Like in fishing, if there's a hot bite, I'm not putting down my rod to fiddle with a camera and set up shots to the point where I rarely even take pictures anymore. For the most part there is amazing stuff being generated by professionals and amateurs and I've enjoyed some videos that were really well done. There are a lot of cliches (and "mistakes" isn't the right word, but laziness I guess?) I see repeated a lot in these videos.

Driving montage. We get it, you had to get there somehow.
Sound editing: this is a tough one probably, but I'll be watching a vid and have to turn the sound way up to hear whispers over the wind noise and then they cut to a bugle sequence that rattles my windows. Wind noise is tough to deal with I know, but add subtitles or otherwise reduce the sound level.
Rapid jump cuts: hate 'em.
Muzak: I understand the need to put this in there to cover over the montage of splicing together a bunch of 1-5 second clips and slow motion and other fancy shots.
Telling and not showing: I understand this one, too. It's hard to always have the camera on when it's 4-5 hours of boredom punctuated by 30 seconds of action. But Rinella said it best when talking about their Afognak bear encounter not being mentioned on the show: If it's not on video, it didn't happen.

This too.

There is a ton of content being generated and it's hard to stand out in a crowd. There's a reason a lot of traditional hunting shows were/are filmed on ranches and high fences. They had to take out as many variables as they could since filming a show is expensive. Folks that put together solid shows are really putting in the effort.

I like the into music. But I hate I mean HATE a 30 minute elk hunting video where the first 15 minutes are packing the truck, driving down the road and practicing shooting bow. And finally we get the the video. Now add music for 12 minutes and a 3 minute clip of of elk hunting. Cut the video down to 8-10 minute.

Waterfowl hunting videos? Might as well be watching paint dry or turkey hunting videos :ROFLMAO:

Seriously though, I just hit mute or change the channel...
