Make sure you have a set of cable chains. The snow can be heavy and wet at this time of year and become very slippery.

We have a set of metal chains if the conditions get too bad for our Cooper Adventurer A/Ts plus 4x4.

Started the drive today. Through New Mexico and into Colorado. Stopped off at Durango (great town) for a stretch of the legs and ended he day in Cortez, CO. Tomorrow we will drive up through Moab and check out Arches Nat Park on our way toward Salt Lake City. It was a beautiful drive with clear sunny skies and temps in the 70s. Couldn't ask for a better day one.

Stop for BBQ at the Copper Pig in Prince George Bc, you won't regret it!

Looks like a good spot. We aren't going to be going through Prince George though. From Jasper we will head up to Dawson Creek.

If you time it right, breakfast at the Toad River Lodge has been worth it each time I've timed it right. They make their own bread, fresh, each day. So good when you've been on the road eating garbage to stay awake.

Take your time and enjoy the ride! Not taking my time was my biggest regret. Take in all the sites and fish, if you do nothing else, fish.

Finished the second day in Ogden, Utah. Some rainy weather but still a good day. The mountains around Salt Lake City are awesome. Tomorrow we head to Montana and the Bitterroot Valley for two days.

If you stop in Banff I recommend eating at sushi train. Wife and I thought it was pretty neat little restaurant. The drive to Jasper was beautiful

We plan on taking our time through Banff and Jasper. If the weather agrees it should be incredible.

While heading up 93, stop in Hamilton and check it out a little. It's a cool little town. But, before you get to Hamilton, STOP! and fish the Bitterroot. I can't remover what will be coming off this time of year, but I'm thinking, possibly some Blue Winged Olives or maybe Pale Morning Duns, maybe even a Caddis hatch, if it's warm enough. Anyway, check it out, some beautiful country to explore, even if you're not a fly fisherman. Oh, and if you're not, we can fix that when you get here.

Ha! Funny you should mention Hamilton and the Bitterroot. We are getting to know that area quite well. Last year we bought some property with a small house between Darby and Hamilton (long term plans). Got into fly fishing a couple years ago so still a novice but tons of fun. The Bitterroot is 1.5 miles from our place so we fish whenever we can. Got tag soup for archery elk this year but with our limited time plan on trying for some dusky grouse during the stop over. Wish we had more time to spend there. Last November I got my first elk (4x5) in that unit. Now that we are moving to Alaska who knows what the future will hold. No matter what.....awesome adventures await!

Don't drive the stretch from Fort Nelson to Watson Lake at night... bison are large, dark, like to stand on the highway and don't give a rats behind about vehicles. Once you get past Dawson Creek if you think you have enough gas to hit the next place, fuel up. Gas stations start to get a little skinny this time of year.

RC

forgot to add... if the metric system drives you nuts... for distance just multiply the km's by .6 to give you miles ( 1000 km app = 600 miles, 90 kmph = 55 mph), for temperature conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit, double it and add 30 ( 20C = 70F, -15C = 0F) :)

Thanks for the info tuffcity. We don't plan on driving at night along the Alcan. Only doing about 350+- miles each day so that we can see the sights and allow for contingencies.
Made it to Montana yesterday. Driving through Utah, Idaho and along the Bitterroot was great. We watched as the fall colors progressed from full on to just about done. Spotted antelope, Rocky Mountain sheep, elk, white tail and mule deer, bald eagles, and a Ferruginous Hawk ( first time seeing one of those - saw about 30 of them long Idaho 28 up from Idaho Falls in the tilled fields). Will post some pictures as soon as I figure out how again.
