Roksliders :

I have some mild hearing loss [guns/power tools/etc]
I also have tinnitus

Recently I recovered from Covid.
Its was not a mild case, but managable.

But now it seems my tinnitus is significantly worse after Covid.

Does anyone have thoughts about hearing aids for hunting, or help with the tinnitus?

I never correlated the two but I've had covid at least twice and my tinnitus has gotten significantly worse since the second infection. FWIW I had lots of strange neurological things going on since covid and had the tinnitus long before I got covid.

Go have your hearing checked by a Audiologist. They will determine how much hearing loss you have, plus the tones and sounds you are unable to hear. Once you have that data, they can then program hearing aids for your tinnitus and hearing loss. Costco has a pretty good program. After your first initial setup you can go back and adjust the programming to fit you even better.

There are several in ear hearing aids that you can use for hunting, shooting that can also be programmed to your own hearing loss and tinnitus. I have a set that I use for range and hunting and generally double up with electronic muffs at the range. When not at the range or hunting, I use behind the ear units.

Keep in mind that hearing aids are mechanical and electronic devices. They do not think, nor weed out sounds and noises that your brain function will do. You will hear every sound that their is to hear. It does take some adjustment to get used to. But with being able to program your hearing aids, you can get them set up so that fit your needs.

I have always had occasional tinnitus in the form of ringing in the ears but a few months post covid I started hearing a buzzing in one ear usually in the mornings as soon as I woke up. It sounded to me like there was a pump running below the floor in the crawl space and literally took me several mornings to figure out it was tinnitus. Needless to say it was a bizarre realization. After having the issue for a few weeks straight it reduced to being occasional, and now is gone. One thing that is certain though, my hearing isn't better but it is more sensitive post covid. If someone or something makes a loud noise close to me it hurts my ears more now.

Definitely see a specialist, but I recently had my ears cleaned, my wife's friend is a nurse practitioner I believe? Went and saw her and she cleaned the wax out of my ears, basically a squirt bottle with a special tip on it.

She flushed em out and man the one was just flat nasty! Hearing is much better!

In the same boat. Have had some tinnitus for years, but after a very mild covid bout in Jan., it seems to be worse. Never had that buzzing sound until after that.

You've seen her adds, call Dr Julie.
Seriously I would talk with a specialist like her or someone closer to you.
If have both and wear 2 game ears so I can hear bugles and converse via whisper to my spouse. Otherwise I hear none of the bugles and trying to understand whispers is frustrating.

Hope you're feeling better at least.

After having covid, I developed tinnitus. I saw a doctor who said it would probably go away in 6 months, but it hasn't. I have hearing loss as a result, but it was only at the same pitch as my tinnitus. He said getting hearing aids would help with the ringing if it got to an unbearable point.

Sorry you have hearing loss and tinnitus. Not much can be done for the tinnitus, hearing aids didn't help mine except they help a bit to hear things at the higher frequencies that most tinnitus is. I had hearing aids from Costco for 20+ years, they always did a good job for me and about half price for the same name brands. Hearing aids are a trade off, kind of a pain but better than missing out on what people say and eventually shying away from conversations because you can't understand what's being said. The in the ear style was problematic for me, sweat tends to kill the electronics in them so I switched to the behind the ear and they were much more reliable and they are very small now. Good luck

Actually have the same thing going here but had covid back around the start of the whole thing. Unsure of the correlation but I’m also going in for an MR here in a week to rule a couple other things out. Otherwise, I’m all clear for hearing aids but the doc is unsure if it’ll help the tinnitus at this point.

Contrary to popular belief, tinnitus can alleviate and even cease completely.
Most of my life I endured it--in some cases it was awful, you guys know the deal. But easing into retirement over the last decade it has become less and less prevalent. Some months there is no ringing or issues at all.
I live in my ear muffs in the workshop, mowing, using the loader...with any loud endeavor. With shooting sports the muffs and the ear plugs both get utilized. It's worth the trouble.

The first step to wellness is to stop the noise and subsequent damage...

I’ve got hearing loss and tinnitus. I have seen two ENTs in the last year and a half both told me that there is nothing they could do for the tinnitus - apart from encouraging me to try not to think about it (which works surprisingly well, except when it doesn’t), and to use a white noise generator at night to drown it out.

My girlfriend had no tinnitus before covid. She’s now been dealing with it for 1.5 years and parosmia for 1 year. There doesn’t seem to be a ton of public discussion about either of those issues; unfortunately it doesn’t look like there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck.

I feel for her. I’ve had parosmia (smell and taste) for 20 months and 15 months, respectively. There’s a FB group that may be of interest to her.

Glad your tinnitus has decreased, that's great! Unfortunately after talking to several Drs and audiologists over a couple of decades your experience is rare. It's different for everyone but normally once it begins it's there to stay. I'm religious about hearing protection but had some jobs when I was young that prohibited any hearing protection and I'm paying for it now. I taught my boys from an early age to protect their hearing and so far they have no sign of either tinnitus or hearing loss. Hope it stays that way

Thanks, your posting is spot on. I feel fortunate to have had mine greatly decrease, but all it takes is stupidity in the shop or range and it's 8 months of ringing madness.

Hope you see some let up with your situation, it's not easy to cope with. You're on top of it with your boys.....+1.

Just wanted to say that I’m sorry to hear about your ongoing symptoms but I appreciate you bringing this up. I work in healthcare and this is not something I’ve heard of as an association with Covid-19 or something I have been asking my patients about as they’re recovering, but you can bet it will be going forward. I’ll run this by the people I work with and if I learn anything interesting or useful I’ll be sure to provide an update. Hope you feel better soon!

Having much of the same issue. For some reason post covid my tubes don't drain my right ear. I've had it drained twice and it now needs it again. For me the tinnitus is there when the fluid is there. Once it's drained it goes away. Last time the PA talked about the possibility of a tube. Hoping I can make it through summer and swimming prior to a tube but not sure. I go back in the 27th.

Man this is wild, I know this is anecdotal but seems like quite a few of you developed it or it got much worse after the damn Covid. What a weird ass virus.
