I've got a couple of rifles to scope and I'm looking for recommendations on rings that tend not to pinch or mar the scope tube.

I'm not going to use a pic rail on these two rifles, so that my eliminate some rings.

Based upon your EXPERIENCE, what are your recommendations?

DNZ scope mount. Pinching comes from thin top metal usually. Also lapping will remove some of that problem. I like to save weight on my rifles, but never with the scope mount.

The biggest offender with any rings is the installer. Make sure you are using good tools and do not over tighten

If you arent using a pic rail, it could help you to get a good recommendation to specify what you WILL use. A tikka direct mount will maybe get a different answer than a browning or a kimber, etc. For what its worth Ive never had a decent set of horizontally-capped rings mar a scope, and I definitely dont under-tighten. Id look for the best rings, and you can bet that those wont mar your scope if installed right.

I'm scoping a Remington M7 & M700.

Considering S&K or Conetrol.

What is your opinion of the Talley two-piece steel bases and vertical split rings?

Burris Signature have a synthetic insert. They will not leave a mark on your scope.

This. I've used Burris Signature rings on many a scope, they've never left a mark.

Those actions are terrible for having parallel tops.

If you don't bed a decent pic rail to them, best chance is to just lap the crap out of whatever you decide to put on it after the bases are torqued down.

It seems like it would be easy to have everything straight and parallel, but it's an issue.

I agree, but I still love those rifles.

I’ve been around a dozen or so pairs of them in both 3/8 dovetail base and those with a wider pic rail base, and they are widely considered a reliable well thought out design IF installed correctly. Many folks confuse them with other designs assuming anything split vertically is the same, and they aren’t. As for scope scratching, they aren’t perfect and unless they are lapped some marks will show the rings were there.

You can use a scope friction paper to prevent scratches - it essentially prevents metal to metal contact.

You could use larger diameter than needed rings and a plastic reducing sleeve.

The current Burris signature rings are weird and the insert only puts pressure on its edges - the older ones in Signature Zee rings have full contact and work well. I have a new pair and haven’t been able to get myself to use them, because they are weird.
