Menu for the backcountry

Hello everyone, I'm sure this topic has been discussed in the past but wondering what you all eat on a typical day when hunting? My menu has been unchanged for several years and by day 6 or 7 its painful. Essentially, just looking for some new options.

My typical menu

Breakfast--Two packets oatmeal, protein bar and coffee
Lunch--Tuna, probar or quest bar.....Alternate--Mountain house
Supper--Mountain house. BCAA recovery drink
Snacks--I of course snack all damn day long--Cliff bars, honey stinger, quest bar, pro bar, jerky.

I'm welcome to any new options and I'm sure this thread could help others as well. Thank you

Take some salami and jerky to break up the monotony, salami isn't real light but it really is high energy and yummy! We also carry triscuits to eat with the salami. We also carry some mre style single serving bags of dry fruit and sugar cookies. Look for MRE Star energy bars, they are fantastic. Bought some Green Belly Meal bars, haven't eaten any yet to see how they taste but they sound good!

My food packs are similar to yours in concept. As long as I have a few mini milky ways and some stinger fruit chews, it keeps me happy through the daily norm. I only have 3 MH meals I like, and that is a decent rotation for me.

I'm a day long grazer. Add in 2 Mtn House and a tortilla and it's good for 1.8ppd after I stripped all the Mtn House foil away. 38-3900cal.

Instead of the instant oatmeal packets I would do old fashioned oats and mix choc chips and craisins in. If you add protein powder you get your protein and that'll fill you up more and last longer IMO. Lunch wise I do the pb bacon honey wraps.. I have yet to get where I don't want to eat those anymore. High calorie and fairly balanced. Other than that your about the same as me.. just an assortment of stuff.

Yup. I burn 2550 calories a day, at maintenance and pack about 3800. Likely a bit more this season hiking 10-13 miles a week.
After I ditched the Mtn House foil I'm about 1.8ppd. You really can't pack enough for a sheep hunt, but I've got 18lb for 10 days loaded up.

15.86 total minus tortillas, smoked salmon and a bit of cheese.

Get a dehydrator and vacuum sealer. You don't have to make everything, but even a couple of meals will a make a difference. An easy thing to do is throw a couple of chicken breasts in a crock pot on low all day, shred the meat and then dehydrate. Put the meat, some stovetop, and gravy mix in a freezer bag with some dried vegetables: Thanksgiving dinner. Shredded chicken, salsa, beans and rice (rehydrated) on a tortilla. Dried fruit/nut mixes (apples, mangos, raisens/craisens, almonds) are also good. There are a lot of dehydrator recipes on the youtube.


I like the Probars, but they get old for me real quick.

ChrisS-This sounds delicious! We have been discussing getting a dehydrator, and need to get serious about researching a good one! What kind is yours?

If wanting to spend a little extra money I think the square trays would make lying out some things easier than the circular ones I have but not enough that I've bothered to get one.

It doesn't take a fancy one. I've got an American harvest still running that I got 20yrs ago. I also have a new presto I got free. Those will get fired up soon here dehydrating chili, browned ground game meat (naturally very low fat thus less spoilage issues), pasta sauce, precooked beans, salsa, pepper/onions, etc. to assemble some meal options. I do the freezer bag/hot water soak (typically at 1:1 by volume ratio) to rehydrate. 20min usually does the trick even when at 11k.

This guy.

There may be better/more expensive ones, the Excaliburs comes to mind, but I think as long as you have a timer and temp control, you can do most everything. That Nesco has done everything I've asked it to. That one comes with three trays and one each no-spill (for fruit puree and sauces) and flexible screens (for small fine foods), but I bought a few extra.

Best for last...breakfast is blueberry crisp cliff bars. Lunches are cheese, salami, nuts/trailmix. Almost forgot the Snickers bars!
