That BH hit that dead branch and it sounded like a .22LR went off in the timber. Broke the entire branch completely off. That bull didn't even flinch......just stood there. .

Second - with a branch like that, maybe it sounded like a branch cracking or falling from a tree, or a more natural sound k

I think Brendon hit the nail on the head. There is all kinds on noise in the woods....its the unnatural sounds that alert them. My compound has a dull thud....that will spook them if its perfectly quiet outside. I have buddies shooting light arrows and their bows have a much sharper slap....and that spooks EVERY animal.

Its like footsteps in the leaves.....I've been 20 yds from elk with my buddy sneaking around 70yds or so away and his footsteps had those elk on full alert...they had him pegged. Shuffle your feet...or take 2 steps....something to break up your human pattern and they hardly lift their head. I've bounded in to bunches of deer and elk [on accident] and they stood there thinking I was another animal.

I really think the quality of the sound matters to all animals.

I would think a similar sound of a 22lr going off in the timber would be pretty unnatural. Heck, it made me jump.......didn't expect it at all. I've had elk just stand there from the thump of my bow shooting......until they're hit. Then the bull is running off and I look to my left at 30 yards and there's a group of cows standing there still staring at me.
