I have not seen anyone say grim reaper. I am guessing there is a reason. Anybody care to share?
Looking at using them on elk.

Ulmer edge for everything. I took an elk and my buddy took two elk last fall and they are incredible.

Magnus Stinger 4 blade 125's here. Had them break shoulder bones on deer. I can get them to group with my field points and they're easy to sharpen. Killed 4 bulls with them.
I will say though that I've also killed 2 bulls and a good bear with G5 Tekan 125's and was very pleased with their performance.
Still sticking with fixed blades for my #1 though...

Do not use Swhacker. You're welcome.

I told my buddy not to use mechanicals on elk with his set up. He has a 80lb omen pro flinging 450 grains at 330 fps or so. He went with shwackers. Shot a spike bull in the shoulder at 30 yards, got 3 inches of penetration and the broadhead sheared off inside the arrow. Just too much energy for that b-head to take hitting something solid.

That sucks. I saw some bad stuff happen on a couple of bulls this year too. IMO the design of Swhackers looks like it should work, but it doesn't.

mechanincal, Rocky mountain snyper 3 blade for me, since they quit making them I buy them up where ever I can. When i finally run out I am not sure what I will go with, but it will be a mechanical. I tune my bow but still prefer the Mech. head. It always flies true, less likely to fail than my Mechanical bow or release and I fully trust it. To many people are ready to blame the head than what really went wrong.

i had a change of heart and tried a G5T3 this year. killed a nice bull very quickly. only 1 blade opened and no passthru on a shot that i have no doubt would have been a passthru with a fixed head like a SlickTrick.

Trophy taker terminal T-lock's for me. They fly like darts out of my setup. My buddy used shuttle T's for years and loved them but tried the Ulmer edges this year and they flew the best of any broadhead he ever shot! He ended up shooting a 155 class WT in central Alberta this year at 52yards from a tree stand - pass threw blowing out a rib on the way out. I was impressed but not enough to make the switch.

Elk are big, tough animals. I know a lot of guys use mechanicals with success for elk, but I've heard a lot of horror stories as well.
That said, it is easy for me to answer this question(for myself) as I shoot traditional. I can get the widest fixed blade heads to
group with my field points. So I use Simmons Tree Sharks (worth googling for the sheer pucker factor these heads give, I might add)

This last elk of mine was quartering away. Arrow entered his paunch just in front of his hind quarter and blew through his far shoulder. Complete pass thru. Second arrow, quartering quartering away again, not as much of an angle. Arrow entered back part of near lung and punched through opposite shoulder again.

Razor sharp broadheads are very important!

I have used montecs on my last 10 animals and one lost buck . I love the durabilty, In one year alone I used one on 3 animals- deer, anterless deer and a elk.. But I have never had good blood with them unless it was heart shot . I can say that most if not all have been short trailing though . So I have the hardest toime switching I have thought about it alot of the last few years since the lost buck.. But will most likly not switch..

One of the great things about this site is that people won't chastise you or tell you that you are Wong on this site. People just share their opinion. I won't name the other sites but that campfire sure is a long range off.
