Manufactures ammo info. vs. real ife?

Do you find the information on a box of high power rifle ammunition to be, accurate, close enough, in the park past or way off. Mainly talking bullet drop at different distances. Knowing all firearms handle ammo differently, what has been your experience. I'm talking hunting rounds, not long range competition shooting, in which case you guys are loading your our rounds.

I've had them be spot on, and also WAY off. I finally bit the bullet and got a magnetospeed sporter chronograph so that I know what I'm dealing with in real life.

Some is definitely better than others. Lots of variables tho, and once you start looking at much distance you really need to shoot it at those distances to know exactly where you are at. Most of their numbers come from long barrels and controlled environment. For example if they use a 26" barrel on a 300wm and you have 20" there is going to be a lot of difference

Back in the early 2000s I was at the range with my 260 and a chronograph. My 140gr reloads were clocking 2725 like they should. My co-worker asked to put his 150gr 270win from the big green R across it. So we did. Advertised velocity was 2850, actual was 2650. He was disappointed to say the least but he said he didn’t care much because it would still poke a hole in a deer under 200 yards. That it will.

pretty much spot on. Most the time I have found them "close enough" in normal hunting ranges (400yds and in) If you are shooting beyond that definitely Chrono or shoot for real world data (I have never chrono'd my rifles) and build a good old fashion chart.

As stated above MOST factory rifle ammunition is shot out of a 24" test barrel. Some magnums are 26". Your barrel length will change that and just individual rifles. Another thing to remember is that the box is the target velocity or kind of average. Most Factory specs allow a range of saw 40fps +/- what is posted on the box. Meaning a 2600fps box marking may be 2640fps average for that lot but the box still says 2600fps.

I have found my 300 winmag shooting Barnes Vortex 180 gr, tipped TSXT BT to be very close out to 300 yards. I have not test past that distance. My 30-06 shooting similar round is close but not to be trusted. I recorded all that performance info and carry it with me when shooting that gun.

I chronographed 3 257 weatherby premium 110 nosler out of my brothers vanguard and all were within 4 fps of box velocity. Pretty impressive I thought

That is my hunting round from the .30-06.

If you don’t mind, could you share your .30-06 barrel length? And what kind of departure from the factory ballistics do you see at 300 yards? Or is it more of a consistency issue?
