PRS/NRL style matches have given me confidence and skill to make most any shot on game inside 600 yards, in all but the most extreme conditions. I know my limits and know my rifle because of what I learned. I started hunting several years ago, and wanted to learn to shoot better. I saw the chance to shoot and learn at the matches, and have some fun. I have been going to local matches for a couple years and have attended a couple two day matches. I just sold the action off of my "match" rifle, cause I won't be doing that as often, and can spin my match barrel onto another action if I feel the need.

I don't like the "games" of the PRS/NRL, I totally get all the criticisms of the haters. I hate the stupid stages, and usually don't even finish those cause I am so annoyed. I go to work on my skills, not win. I figure if I can make 5 shots in 90 seconds, I can make one very good shot in 90 seconds. And, the vast majority of people are really fun to meet and hang out with. I've made some friends shooting.

This year, I am going to try to make some of the NRL Hunter series matches. https://nrlhunter.org/

Who else shoots PRS/NRL?

Do you plan to shoot any of the NRL Hunter matches?

I love the concept and format of NRL hunter. More concentration on managing recoil and fundamentals when you can’t use the forgiveness of a 24# 6br.

No hunter matches close to me though and I’m not going to trade hunting vacation time to attend.

I'd love to see some rifle comps tailored specifically to mountain hunting. Thinking something like total archery challenge (yes I know the safety concerns and liability would be through the roof). Basically hiking from shot to shot. Everything from a 100 yd mover to a 1000 yd cross canyon, all steel targets cut to various animals. All rifles have to be sub 16 lbs loaded with all attachments. If you didn't make it hunting calibers only then make it classes (257/270, 6.5s, 7s, 30s, 338+, and iron only big stuff (45-70, 416 rigby, 375 h&h, etc)

Now that's something I'd travel for haha

I have been playing the NRL22 game lately, there probably isn't a better way to sharpen your skills than shooting in the competition arena, almost any type is a great way to improve skills. The hunter series looks like fun an I am going to try and make a couple.

I'm interested in signing up for one here. I don't have any experience in shooting competitions, so I think it would be a great learning experience. Just need to figure out how I'm gonna ration my ammo for that and hunting season...

I would love to try one of the comps out, I just can't figure out how to come up with the amount of factory ammo required to practice and shoot one. Maybe I misread, but you can only use factory ammo right or have it commercially handloaded?

I don't believe there is any restriction on source of ammo.

My source of confusion, from the rules page:

Makes sense. You basically need to hit 2725 FPS with a 140 grain bullet to meet the power factor. They are probably worried about folks showing up with factory 6.5 creedmoor ammo shooting 140s at 2710 and not being able to do anything about it while all the guys running loaded ammo at 2770-2860 are good to go.

Part of me likes the rules because they play nicely with my 6.5x47 fetish and pile of brass that i'll probably never kill.

I go hike myself in local mountainsand hills, and pick a distant rock and make it a timed stage. Its better than a range day.

There are some matches that come close.

Some NRL will hike more than others.

The rule is so no one shows up with a 6mm to game it. Scott Satterlee has run the NF ELR and Hornady hunting matches and is the brain child. It is intended to require fundamentals of a true hunting, hence power factor and weight classes.

The power factor was made higher than you can run a 115 6mm at max velocity... some factory ammo in .257 and 6.5 didn't make PF, so they exempted it because he considered anything bigger than 6mm a hunting caliber.

A 6.5 creed is a good round for the matches so you make PF but still spot shots more than a magnum. I talked with a ahooter that is in the know.

Given the current state of ammo, I don't have enough of a single factory manufactured to run a match with. Got a box of this and box of that lying around. I'm new to reloading, but was able to scrounge together some H4350 and hornady 140 bthp for my 22" 6.5 creed. I should be able to get those going up above 2725 out of the 22" barrel, ya?

We have one event locally here in Dalton, NH. I may do it just to see what it's all about. Not really going to shoot it with what I consider a hunting gun, my 6.5 Creed is in a KRG and has a new barrel on it and weighs around 12#, so puts me in one of their two "open" classes, not that I care about that.

Fortunately, I've got plenty of powder, bullets, and brass for that gun too. @Don Qui Puncher - end of June....

My friend Scott is a great guy and has put on a more realistic shooting experience. He and the others who run these matches are good people who are helpful and are always looking to grow the sport.

Sign up today with confidence.
He is one of the best ambassadors and leaders for the sport, especially in practical hunting applications.

I have interacted with him on forums and called him about his match a couple years ago. Absolute champ of a guy.
