30-06 168grain eldm m1 garand factory load, 150ish yard shot quartering to me. Barely visible entrance wound just behind shoulder, disgustingly gaping exit. Massive blood trail. Total distance ran was 20-30 yards.

Pig shot about hour ago. Good size sow quartering slightly away about 100 yards. 30-06 150 swift scirrocco (older rem factory load). Dropped at shot but did not exit. Did not autopsy because I did not want to smell like pig for the next few days plus I have dug through bunch of them in the past shot with scirroccos so know what to expect

300 gr Berger Elite Hunter out of a 338 LM at about 2350 fps at impact. Entrance and exit were just over caliber size. Dropped in its tracks.




230 gr Berger OTM out of a 30 Nosler at just under 1900 fps impact velocity. The bullet did not hit a rib on the way in but hit one on the way out. The doe ran 75-100 yards. Like @Ross’s elk earlier in this thread, it took a while to get to her.

This is the offside where the hide caught the bullet. Sloshy insides. One shot kill, and he died within yards of impact.

But how were you able to shoot accurately with a caliber larger than 6mm?? I have heard it cannot be done with any reliability

Here is an elk shot at 656 yards with a 7/300 NMI and a 195 Berger. Purposefully shot in the shoulder to try to anchor him so that he did not fall down into the ravine (nightmare pack out)

No exit to show, smashed through shoulder and the shrapnel and energy caused immediate death and drop to the ground - 700 Lb elk

Would an 80 grain bullet out of a 6mm accomplished that?

You might not have had the same results with an 80 grain bullet out of a 6mm, but what about the 22 cal 77 gr TMK? Based on the 500+ pages on the subject, complete with 8x10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one*, it sounds like you could have stretched your range a bit farther with the TMK.

*Sorry, but I had to throw in a little Arlo Guthrie.

Real question - have you seen results on an elk in the shoulder like that?

First of all, those of us who know what we are doing won’t be using 80 grain bullets out of our 6mm caliber rifles.

With a 108, 109, or 115 grain bullet, I wouldn’t hesitate to take the same shot and would expect, and get, the same result. Do you think there is something magical about elk shoulders that stop bullets less than 7mm in diameter?

Seems like I knew what I was going to hit a 6" spot at 656 off a sitting rest in the field
