You're probably the 50th person to come into a scope thread with a mythical "Leupold VX" series that has "never lost zero".

Every single one of those has been invited to send in for an Eval, to help show that a Leupold can perform. Not a single one has been sent in.

Would you be willing to send your VX-5 in for an evaluation? Help show folks what a Leupold can do?

"No"

Yeah, that's weird.

Haha. Funny enough I got one of the first Mark 4 HD scopes and I offered to send it in and I did not get a response. I am over it though.

Thinking about grabbing a scope during black friday sales. I have a few mark 5s but am curious about the trijicon tenmile. For those that have tried both, what was your preference?

I have limited experience with the mark5, just used it on a buddy’s 300 petra, at the time his scope had shifted zero but he wasnt sure if it was the gun or the ammo he was using. I do have a tenmile and I like it. The reticle is annoying to me at higher powers, mainly I find it to be too cluttered when I get above 15. I had mine fall a couple feet and land on my floorboards a couple weeks ago after also slipping and falling in wet snow elk hunting.
I am going to try and check zero this weekend and can report back if it lost zero or not.

No idea on the led sled. I’m just saying that not all new shooters are like your 10 year old. Many can’t shoot straight right out of the gate. With a little help they all learn fairly quickly but not all are the equal of your child.
This isn't just my kid. It's everyone I teach.

I find that time spent going through the correct positions, the why's, the what not to do, showing what happens in poor positions and THEN what a proper position does, then a couple of dry fires, helps people put impacts on target from the beginning. Maybe spend more time explaining and demonstrating and less time pulling the trigger.

NOBODY is a natural shot. NOBODY. Some people may have a brain that quickly resolves issues internally but that is learning while doing not a natural shooter.

Mannnnnn, how i would so very love for the VX3i 2.5-8x36 to have passed the drop test. That's easily my favorite general purpose hunting scope. Super light, only about $400, great glass, made in America. There's so very much to like about it.

Mine have been great and I will keep using them as I have, but I was raised to be very delicate with my scopes. It was SOP my whole life to check zero any time your scope hit literally anything, and we'd often have to rezero, and we didn't think anything of it. Now that I know better, I feel like I've been getting cheated on since I was 8 years old.

Cmon leupold. Just make that one scope perfect for me. Make it hold zero. I'll buy 10 of them.
I bought that vx3hd 2.5-8 for my barret fieldcraft. It’s still sitting in the box. Why?! The drop test results I read about here.

I love my leupolds as much as the tikka cult loves their tikkas.

Yet I haven’t put that 2.5-8 on my rifle yet.

Instead we put the vx6 on it and replaced the 2.5lb NF that I bought it with.

But I’m looking for something else for that rifle. I just want a lighter scope.

We ain’t shooting 800yds. We don’t want to shoot longer than 300 with it and ideally we shoot 100 or less.

I'm not that familiar with Leupold but there appears to be a Mark 4 HD evaluation. You may be referring to a different one though.

You are assuming that we did not do that. I am truly glad you and your friends are as good as you are. I have not experienced the 100% success you have had. I’ll try harder :)

My entire hunting life I’ve used Leupolds because that’s what dad used and bought.

I still have one vx5 on a 300wm that has seemed to be durable. That 300wm is a browning Xbolt shooting 215 Bergers and is extremely accurate. I let a friend use that gun during this past deer season and as we were packing up to go home he had the gun leaning against the sxs while we were getting the gun cases out. The gun slid and fell on dirt/rocky ground.

The gun was sighted 1.5” high at 100. After getting home I took it out to the range. The gun was now shooting 5.25” high and 1.5” right. The pic below shows the first shot to the right, adjusted left 1.5” and then 3 shots stacked. I adjust back down 4” and it stacked 5 more into a .75” group. Sorry I only took the pic of the first groups to show my dad how far off it moved. Needless to say that scope has been pulled and will be replaced with a Trijicon. Just so you know, I’d love to use Leupold because I think they have the best overall qualities…except for durability. I WANT to use Leupold but I won’t.

I know two people personally here in Alaska, that are not on Rokslide, who owned Mark 5 HD’s.

Within the last 3 years, both of them had failures in the field that led to missing really nice rams while sheep hunting. These weren’t day hunts. One owns a plane a flew hundreds of miles to get to his spot and the other had hiked/packrafted many miles in as well. Neither knows each other and both thought they had the best scopes. On each of their return, both scopes had shifted considerably when shot at the range.

One now uses Trijicon Tenmile’s and the other Nightforce NXS & NX8.

Yeah that’s super weird. And sad too that he thinks he’s an expert.

I saw a guy miss a ram 3 times this year with a nightforce on his gun. Given how many NF there are compared to how many luepold there are in the field one could argue the failure rate is higher with the nightforce.

I don’t care but find it funny how defensive guys get about how their opinion on luepold gets them worked up.

One fact is nightforce supports poachers when they decided to keep one on their staff after numerous convictions. That’s enough for me to stay away from them.

Well, for all of the naysayers here who despise Leupold scopes they sure sell very well in the classifieds and dare I say just as fast as NF, SWFA, Vortex, and Trijicon. Perhaps the overwhelming number of members are not reading the drop test notes...or just disregarding it since they don't plan on throwing the rifle over the cliff or down the rockslide. Sure, I also own several NF scopes but you sure don't want a 20-30oz scope on a lightweight rig when a Leupold is more suitable for your needs, or you don't have a $20,000 hunt on the line that you saved for 10 years to do. In addition, not everyone has a budget for $1500-$2000+ scopes. There is a pretty wide latitude whereas a Leupold scope that has not given any trouble and holds zero fits in just fine

Like I said...Leupold's are just fine for most people and most hunting situations. Not everyone needs or wants the best, most expensive and heaviest scopes on the market. Use what fit's your need and budget. I read and understand the drop tests.....but it does not change my mind. Just as in any other tests done by a single entity, I take it with a grain of salt. We have all seen many and various tests done by a single entity before and then when done by a different entity the results were different, and sometimes quite different. Perhaps that is why second opinions are so valuable.
You're thinking about the "drop tests" like I used to as well (incorrectly).

Some help yes, and a proper gun and bullet for their size. I'm on an annoying group text where one of the guys sent a video of his 8 year old shooting a .30-06 with a shit rest, standing up. The poor kids face after and he and his wife just laughed and said "was that fun!" Yeeeaahhhh....

You can miss without the cause being a zero shift or a mechanical issue with the scope at all. Did he check and see a zero shift, and rule out the base/rings/stock? Or did he just get excited and miss?
One fact is nightforce supports poachers when they decided to keep one on their staff after numerous convictions.
That's true enough. Plus their reputation for reliability has allowed them to be complacent on their ATACR line especially. Low power tunneling in all of them except the 4-16, a clunky zero-stop system, the rotating eyepiece for magnification change, and image quality that varies from the 7-35 being excellent to the 5-25 being noticeably worse and others being in between. But until someone matches their durability it's kind of a moot point.

I understand this position, simulating true field use and high round count can be tough on certain scopes. Not everyone has the funds to replace the scope when it fails, I get that. Figured one though over the years, at least, could be sent in from the 50-60 "never lost zero ever Leupolds" that get brought up.

Why are you so obsessed with Nightforce? They make like maybe one model of scope that has a reticle worth using for hunting for me personally.
