My understanding is he shot a wolf but didn’t have a wolf tag. Legally he could have put his elk tag on it, but his elk hunt would be over. He chose to run to town and buy a wolf tag instead. He was found out after the fact.
If my recollection of that is wrong someone please correct me. Someone here probably knows the story.
IIRC Gritty arrowed the wolf, felt like it was a fatal shot, and failed to “find” it, but admitted to not looking too hard. Had he found the wolf, he would have been legally required to put his elk tag on it. This did not have to be the end of his elk hunt, because at the time you could buy two elk tags. He claimed he was going to town anyway, and chose to buy a wolf tag instead of a second elk tag. The next day I think he arrowed a bull and found the wolf.
Had he purchased a second elk tag, then “found” the wolf, he would have been completely legal. Had he found the wolf and tagged it with his elk tag, then purchased a second elk tag, he could have continued his hunt and been completely legal. Buying the wolf tag instead of the elk tag would only indicate legal behavior if he believed he had it killed or would not recover the wolf he already shot “at”, and thought he might encounter another. Looking for the wolf he knew he shot the day before, AFTER killing an elk, but possessing only one elk tag, definitely shows that he likely intended to tag a previous kill with a new tag, and that’s exactly what he admitted to.
I hope that I would do better in that situation. Honestly I could see myself talking myself into the same choice. It’s dark, I’m cold, I can’t find the wolf, “I’ll just look tomorrow, but I need to go get another elk tag. Wait a wolf tag is $25 and a second elk tag is $750? One of them is going on a wolf if I ever find the wolf. Should I just get the wolf tag? Idaho doesn’t want $750 for a wolf. They want you to shoot the wolf right?” Not legal. Not okay. Shouldn’t do it. But I can see how I could talk myself into it if I wasn’t careful. I pulled the tag prices out of thin air. At the end of the day, Gritty was either willing to pay elk price for the wolf when he let the arrow go, or he planned to cheat the system from the beginning. I’m sure it was hard to keep that in mind when handing over the cash though.
That would all be taking him at his word. Who knows. Maybe he recovered the wolf the day he shot it and stashed it to save money. I don’t know.
