Watching a commercial claiming 1 in 3 people will get shingles during their lifetime. I know one person to suffer this. Curious about the commercial's claim so I'm posting this poll.

To sell vaccines, that's the purpose.

You're polling on a website forum aimed at probably pretty healthy people. You're not going to get an answer anywhere near the actual number. Shingles is common in people with weak immune systems and the elderly. I'm guessing this site is disproportionately not those things.

I've wondered that as well, I don't know anyone that has had it. Maybe only liberals get it?

I had it this spring at 31. It was terrible and I still am dealing with the nerve damage from it.

I work in a skilled nursing facility. Based on my experience, I'd estimate 20% of my patients have had shingles. Of those 20%, I'd say 50/50 have had the vaccination.

I know someone that got it. It was pretty minor and was gone in about a week. He got pretty lucky, I have heard it is horrible.

I think my sister in law had them. So between my wife, her sister and myself. The 1:3 holds true. o_O

Problem is I know a few more people than that.

Being a pharmacist I see people with it on a regular basis. You don't want to get them. They can be extremely painful. I have seen a few patients that have had them in their eyes. I am not sure that it is 1 in 3 patients that have had then though.

I've had it. It was a small patch about an inch and a half on my forearm. Very painful and left a small scar. I've seen similar marks on others who had no idea what it was. Has very little to nothing to do with how healthy you are.

My mother had them this year while undergoing a round of new drugs for the cancer she's fighting. Horrible pain and will suffer for the rest of her life from permanent pain from the nerve damage. You definitely want to do the shot !

I got it a couple years ago. Fortunately was a mild case on my ribs with a little discomfort and no permanent effects. I had not gotten the vaccine.

1 in 3 is probably accurate, but a 33% of getting it some time in your life isn't that scary when you consider this is just a recurrence of the chicken pox virus.

Just a recurence of chicken pox? Not even close. The pictures they show on the vaccine commercials are accurate. My mother had them a couple of years ago at 89. She had them on her lower back and the back of her legs. The best way she could describe the pain was like 3rd degree burns and like someone else said it did result in nerve damage so the pain never fully goes away.

Go down to your local Senior's Center and take your poll......quite common in older folks and a miserable disease.
It ruined the life of a friend.......eyes and face distorted and painful.....never been the same after five years.
