I had it in my early 20's. My mom the nurse took one look and knew what it was. Yes it's common. If you've had chicken pox you can get shingles. The treatment they gave me was valtrex. The same stuff they give for herpes. It's all the same family. They worst part was I had to go into the same pharmacy I worked in as a teenager through high school with all the same people to pick up my Valtrex.
Had a small spot on my ribs 10yrs ago........I still have pain from the nerve damage. I got the vaccine after that first incident and haven't had another episode. Nobody wants this stuff. If you've had chicken pox, get the vaccination. Shingles is nothing you want to mess with.
54 have had it 3 times. Worst was at 14 doctor said I was the youngest he had seen. The other times were around 40 and around 50. The worst was when I was young, it was bad and I would say it felt like a 3rd degree burn, although I never had a 3rd degree burn. I have known others to get it and sometimes the pain is excruciating. One of my coworkers had it in her mouth and she would just breakdown because of the pain and this lady never missed a day of work in 40 years.
My father has it 8 yrs ago at 60yrs old, he still has pain in his neck/face and was left with scarring.
My grandmother has had it a couple of times.
An ex-girlfriend got it at 20years old
I've had chickenpox so when I hit 50 yrs old (or whatever the recommendation) I'm for sure getting the vaccine
I'm 27 and had it once. A spot about two inches in diameter appeared on my ribs for a few weeks. It burned and itched like hell, then it seemed clear pussy fluid for a while. I got some antibiotics and it helped speed up the healing process. I can't imagine how much worse it could get.
I'm 45 and I have had it at least 2X per year for almost 10 years. Problem with having it young is that you cannot get the vaccine. Mine seems to be stress induced (pretty high stress job). I also have a pretty rare case as I get it bi-laterally as well. Typically only affects one side of the body.
Sometimes the pain is unreal, other times it is not as bad. I have a med I can take when I feel it coming on which will reduce the duration of the outbreak. But it is 5 pills per day for 10 days which really screws up the rest of my systems.
Last outbreak was right at the beginning of archery elk!!!
I got it a couple of years ago. Thought it was some kind of rash, it hurt and wasn't going away- my wife took one look and said you you have shingles. Of course I don't believe her Went on the internet and low behold it appears I do. Went to the doc, yes indeed I did, gave me some medication (can't remember what) and it went away in less than a week.
I don't think it was accidental, but just previous (and during) I had a stress fracture in my right heel that was causing a lot of pain. I think they were linked???
They told me to wait a few years before getting the vaccine as my immunity would be high from having it.
I thought the same... never hear of it. In the past few months 3 of my best friends have come down with it, all in their 50s. Terrible stuff. So talked to my doc about it and he concurs that at least of third of those who've had chicken pox get shingles, but the vaccine is kind of hit or miss and perhaps protects 50% of time. And it costs $250+
I haven't had it yet, knock on wood. My grandpa, and aunt and an uncle and my wife's dad have all had it. My wife's dad had permanent nerve damage in his face and had a lot of complications associated with it.
Not yet for me, had chickenpox 30 years ago and that sucked. It was on my eyes, lips, etc.
My mother, grandfather, brother-n-law, and father-n-law have all had shingles. My grandfather had it on his head, face, and in his eye about 5 years ago at 85. I've not seen many that are as pain tolerant as he is, and he said the pain was something else. He has pretty much lost his vision in that eye. I'll get the vaccine when I hit the minimum age.
I had a small spot about the size of a quarter on my lower back about 5 years ago. The actual rash or whatever didn't really hurt, but the nerve pain in my back was brutal! I pulled a muscle in my back a week before that, the doctor said that could be enough to cause it. Your right it's mostly common in older people, I was like 30 or so. I can't imagine having it as bad as those commercials show! I sure as shit hope I never get it again!!
Looking at the poll now (Thanksgiving day) and seeing that it's over 17% "yes", to get to 33% is fathomable considering that our average age on Rokslide is much lower than "older people" and our sample size to draw from is naturally going to skew the "yes" lower.
good topic. I didn't have enough to worry about already.
