Love my jeep. Throw a hitch hauler on the back to cart out deer etc. Trailor if need be. Have a soft top for summer time fishing and the hard top goes on for hunting/winter. Gas mileage is about 20 highway with 35s. 16 or 17 around down.

I have a 05 Wrangler that works great for getting back there but doesn't have shat as far as space is concerned. A quick day hunt is doable with the hitch haul rack. Anything longer and it gets flat towed to the destination. Now that the kids are starting to hunt with us, it is just too small and is currently FS.

My Silverado is only 2wd so I bought a Jeep XJ Cherokee just for hunting. Mostly to get me in further back on some pretty rough roads. It does lack some room but like another poster stated cargo haulers work great for these vehicles. Best part about it....I dont care about dirt, mud, blood, or ticks getting on my interior. Its a beater!20180211_103050resized.jpg

Call me crazy but if I didn’t have to get rid of my truck bed for hauling the dogs/firewood/ etc. you’d find me driving a Subaru. But I also wear some Patagonia baselayers so what do I know 🤣

Subaru, older cheaper one, I think 2002 or 3! I have a truck i use when there's deep snow, but the Suby does great 99% of the time. Big game = coolers in the back with ice ready for the quartered pieces or strap them to the top. Had three critters on the top years ago, blood dripping down the sides, got strange looks driving through towns. Can sleep in the back easy. Put on a receiver hitch (a ninny 1 1/4" one) and hauls a trailer pretty well. Very cheap to drive, reliable, very effective especially for longer trips, about 24 mpg, depreciation isn't a thing, cheap insurance, permanent license. Other than looking a little metro, what's not to like?

I've wanted to use our Toyota Corolla sometimes for gas mileage on easier roads than than my GMC Sierra. Worried about stink factor and ticking off my wife.

If I had a cooler in the trunk and cooler in the back seat I think I'd have enough space for everything. I'd bone everything out and put inside.

Think I could keep stink to a minimum that way?

My hunting clothes could go in the trunk and I could put on some non gross clothes. Seems like I could make it work just fine.

Same here, 2wd Silverado. Looking back, I should have gotten an XJ. Had ones years ago for Rubicon wheelin and such, very capable. Quite a bit more room than the TJ and can easily handle a roof rack.

I have a 2014 4Runner with a 3” lift and good tires. I have a roof rack for extra cargo when needed. It’s been a great hunting, daily driver, and family vehicle but I do miss having a truck bed for hauling bigger things.

This year will be a little different for me Iv used my pickups or suburban in the past this year my elk hunt will be out of my wife’s Ford Focus. My thinking is it’s 38mpg vs 22mpg, I’m going with nothing but a backpack and my bow, I can fit my elk cooler in the back seat, and it’s well traveled well maintained roads all the way to the pull off that I’ll head up the mountain from.

I used full size SUV’s for 20 years. A mix of Broncos, GMC Yukon XL, Expeditions. They all worked pretty good for my needs. I had a ATV and trailer as well. All where stock vehicles I never modified any of them. I armored up the interiors with floor mats front to back. They all worked great. A few years ago I switched to a crew cab pickup-because the SUVs I looked at had me worried that I could get in and out of the woods as they were pretty low on the ground clearance. They looked like big azz soccer mom station wagons to me. I like the pick up better but sometimes miss the covered storage of the SUV’s.

My wife let me borrow her car to go hunting years ago. Then after I did, claimed I ruined it and it smelled funny. I think it was just a ploy to get a new car.

Done it a few times now where I just rent a compact car for the quick missions.

I got 39mpg average from Michigan to central Wyoming and back. Car never went below 88mph west of Sioux Falls.

Don’t build complex solutions to small problems. Try to cover 80% of the needs with the cheapest option, and build a work around to eliminate or fill the 20% needs as they arrive.

All that said if you swallow ur prize, mid 2000’s minivans kick ass for missions.

I've considered(and still do) getting a Subaru of some sort.

More and more I'm doing more backcountry/out of a pack style hunting. The pickup is nice if I'm bringing a big camp but honestly the last 4 or 5 hunts I've done I could've made a honda civic work. Like someone else mentioned, with this style of hunting you aren't just gonna throw an animal in the back and drive home. It would already be quartered, so just need room for my pack and my cooler.

With that said, I don't think I'd trade my truck in on one, because the utility of a truck is nice... but it would be nice getting 30mpg with some of the trips I take.

I’m going to go stealth mode with the commuter I just got, works great in Seattle and should work good for all the trails in Wa.

Still looking at doing a 2” lift and some bfg all terrains.

This was a 2006 TJ unlimited Rubicon with a 4” NTh degree Mobility Long arm kit. I miss it very much.

This is my exact fear. I do want to try a car mission though. Keep some coin in my pocket for the gas.
