Ah yes, Weedstock Rainbow Family Gathering. They had their thing here quite a few years ago and then came back to the area and did it a few more times. Kept the ERs busy with ODs and bad trips. Stinkiest damn dumpster divers you ever saw.

when I was in high school I worked at a grocery store. You’d go out to the dumpster to throw out garbage and a head would pop out and ask if there was more coming because he was gathering for x number of people.

Apparently they have overrun local hospitals with bloody diarrhea and the local jails can't hold all of the trouble makers. I can smell the pictures I've seen.

Happened to be traveling through Oregon several years ago and managed to stay in John Day. Pull Indio the hotel parking lot and there was 15, yes 15 K-9 cop cars in the parking lot, thought stuff is getting serious around here. Here to find out all the K-9 cops were staying there for the rainbow gathering on the forest outside of town.
Next day I'm headed over to the Snake River and I so at a gas station (Oregon at the time had a law and maybe still does that you can't pump your own gas) so I'm talking to this sweet old lady when I notice a string of Harleys go by in the hundreds, some week long bike rally going on at the same time. I said, this must be interesting around here with all the hippies and bikers? She says, I'll take the bikers any day, they at least pay for their stuff. She went on to tell me she's finding hippies sleeping in her yard in the morning, literally showering naked in her backyard with a garden hose, dozens walk through the gas station and just steal whatever they want and there's so many of them she can't stop them, or even prove who took what when she calls the cops.
Sounds like a stand up crowd.

It's interesting that these "get togethers" have happened every year for a couple of decades at least and in most cases bring a lot of problems with it, many lasting long after the event.

They are almost always on National Forest lands (varying the states). Why would the Forest Service, knowing from at least two decades of experience, even consider permitting the gatherings?

Deny the permit. If they insist on coming anyways, arrest those that don't leave.

It's been going on since the 70's and they fight legal battles with the USFS every year over access. Argue its their right to peaceably assemble on public lands.

Exposure to this group in the early 90's is what opened my eyes to public lands an our ability to use them. They used to do a good job of cleaning up after themselves, sorry to hear that's changed.

They were over in the western UP years ago. They’d go into the local grocery store, piss all over the meat and grab it from the dumpster later.
