I think people on here overstate the groundbreaking nature of tipped match bullets, particularly in the 6mm. @Tahr has posted tons of big game kills with traditional big game bullets in .223, and @Formidilosus includes non-match bullets on his list of highly effective .223/6mm projectiles that he’s shared. I’m not arguing against the use of match bullets, but there’s plenty of other, older, options that are also effective. The smaller caliber match bullet is disruptive technology. Until those bullets existed, small calibers were limited in range and ability to take big game with the bullets that existed. This is a key part of the theory of small calibers for taking big game. You can’t just go grab any 223 or 6 mm bullet and have it work.
Hunters have been effectively killing big game with 62-75 grain .223 bullets and 90-100 grain 6mm bullets for decades. I think the difference is now we have a massive body of evidence to prove it.
