What bolt action would you chose to fill the gap between 223 and 30-06? Looking for something low recoil that kids/women won't mind hunting and plinking with.

It really boils down to 243 or 6.5CM. I have experience with both. 7mm-08 is nice, too. 6mm CM might be interesting. Probably prefer short action. Already have the lever actions taken care of.

I’m a big fan of the 6.5cm. No manbun here ;) . It just works and there’s a ton of ammo types out there for decent prices. I hardly shoot my 30-06 or 7mag anymore.

There’s probably dozens of calibers to fit that spot and all will work well. But I can only speak to the 6.5.

Depends on what value you want to lean on.
If you're wanting a little more punch for Elk I'd go 6.5
If you're leaning towards lower recoil 6CM

I'd definitely go 6cm over 243 though. They are twisted tighter for a heavier bullet, which I believe increases lethality. And there is a ton of great factory ammo.

Mathematically speaking middle ground would be approximately 6.5

I presently own 3, 6.5 CM’s which get shot a lot and 1, .243 which I shot the other day for the first time in a year and a half.

I’m always skeptical with new things so I don’t trust that the 6MM CM will be around for very long. Of course I thought the same thing about the 6.5 CM and it took me 10 years after it was introduced to buy one. There’s a good chance I’ve got that wrong to though.

I’ll also suggest that you consider the 6.5 Grendel. Two of my friends have them and they’re 100% pure joy to shoot.

What I own for my kids when they get of age are the 243, 250-3000, 260, & the 30-30.

If I had to choose another it'd be the 25-06.

i was actually thinking .257 roberts too just to be different. long action though if that's a consideration.

i'd wager alot of moose have been shot with runningwater's 6.5x55 suggestion

If it’s for wife and kids the .243 is hard to beat. I shoot my kids compact one all the time. I actually don’t have a 6.5 to compare. If all big game hunting was on the menu than the 6.5 seems the better fit. Make it a 6.5x47 to be different 😀

.243 for low recoil and plenty of factory loads from plinking to match to hunting. 6.5 CM has slightly more load choices but a good 20% - 40% more recoil, depending on the load. On Midwayusa, for example, there are 76 factory loads for 6.5, but there are 65 loads for.243, still a huge selection.
