Well I took your advise and tried some, I think, decent Scotch. First I went out for drinks and to eat, a few nights ago, at a nice restaurant in the big city (Anchorage). I tried a couple high end, or at least the highest end, single malt Scotch's they had, and low and behold, I found them to be very enjoyable. So today, I went out and bought my first bottle ever of Scotch, and I'm enjoying a glass right now. :)

If you are a whiskey fan I'd go with Belvanie double/triple wood or Caribbean cask. It is a very good scotch that is decently priced without getting into the complex/interesting styles like an Islay scotch (Laphroig).

Well, if it's locally available (we tend to have a limited availability up here), I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Jack Daniels. Uninspired, I know. We also have Snickers bars on ice for when you tag out. Everyone is always gunning to get the first snickers bar. I look forward to the snickers bar more than anything else.

Prior to my recent solo moose hunt my wife gave me a gift...a new titanium flask. I considered the choices I had and eventually poured 8 oz which I packed away, just in case. That flask became my Wilson after so many days, as I looked forward to a short visit. Wouldn't you know it....I somehow managed to kill a great bull very late in my trip and we did celebrate!

Oh...and I was celebrating with one of my favorite friends, Colonel E.H. Taylor (single barrel).

Found this in a wine/spirits shop in Casper on the way back from my mule deer hunt. It's excellent, whether in camp or at home.

Wow Kevin, you got some pretty high class taste. I'd choose Pappy for sure although, at upwards of 3K/fifth, I don't believe that I'll ever be able to afford it, not to mention the fact that it's so damn difficult to come by. My all-around go to bourbon is either Knob Creek single barrel reserve or for special occasions, ie., whenever I'm lucky enough to tip something over, it's Booker's.

Blended whisky sympathizers and Euro whiskey snobs might talk a big game, but If there were a civil war fought between whiskey genres, bourbon clearly has the best armed and most manly fan base

Maybe so, but as Regional Commissioner Emeritus for the Clan Donald, I'd most likely disagree. After all, Hadrian didn't build that wall betwixt Scotland and England to keep the English in....... And as a Mac Donald I can tell y'all that Highland Park, Lady Claire Mac Donald's favorite, at least at 12 years, isn't worth putting in your radiators...the 24, that's a different story though-somewhat different in price, too! As my celebratory event though, I'll take two fingers (measured between my index and pinky!), of Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold, and a Gurkha Black Ops maduro torpedo.

While we're on the subject of whisky, or whiskey, permit me to share with you my family's recipe for a toddy. This has been in my family since at least the 1400's:

In a large mug, fill it half-full with boiling spring water, add two large spoonfuls of a local honey (I keep bees, so there's never a shortage around here), stir with a cinnamon stick until dissolved. Then add two cloves, a squeezed lemon wedge, and fill to the top of the mug with scotch. If you can drink it through the cinnamon stick, all the better. if you have a cold, it's a perfect remedy; you probably won't kick the cold, but you won't give a damn.......

I'm really Diggin on it. I also bought purchased a bottle of this and definitely like the Laphroaig more. the Lap is pretty smoky, the Aberlour, not so much.

I carry a flask of 108.4 proof Wild Turkey Rare Breed in my survival gear and have another for my daypack.
Had occasion once while turkey hunting to fall and bang up my knee, had to sit tight and wait for my buddy to go back to camp and get help. That little flask of pain relief was dang sure nice to have. By time they got back to me to help me get back to camp, I was "feelin no pain"

How is that? I have some Select but it's kinda peaty and I only drink it when it's cold out.

It's an Islay, of course it's going to be peaty. Most of the complaints about Laphroaig Select are that it is not peaty enough and too balanced for an Islay. Never had 15, but 12 is my go-to Islay scotch when I'm in the mood. I'm not a die-hard Islay drinker though and if I were to choose my favorite scotch overall it would be Balvenie Caribbean Cask.

Thanks. I had a bottle of Talisker Storm last year that to me was much more peaty than the Select. That, I could only drink on the coldest days. I guess I have more of a Speyside taste.

Yeah, Laphroaig knows that their whiskey isn't for everyone. They actually do unfiltered commercials that include just as many people that hate it as love it. Laphroaig: One Whisky, Many Opinions | Islay Reads Opinions | Opinions Welcome - YouTube My friend who lived in Scotland for a year described it in the 2 best ways and I can't decide which is best: "It tastes like a baseball glove, but in the best way possible" or "It tastes like a band-aid, but in the best way possible"; probably somewhere in the middle.
