For all the scotch drinkers out there, have you tried this one yet? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

I have a bottle at home. I was not a big fan, but then I heavily favor the Islay scotches also. Lagavulin 16 being my liquid gold.

Never tired any Caol Ila stuff yet surprisingly.

I've also had the pleasure of drinking a nice cold IPA on top of a mountain, after a very hard day of hiking. Like you Shawn, I felt the weight was unneeded, so I stuffed them into my buddy's pack when he wasn't looking. He never even noticed the extra wt. and didn't discover the treat until we were unpacking to spike for the night. I think he may have been a little irritated at first but, a couple sips into it had him smiling from ear to ear. I have found this to be the best/most efficient method of getting beer up to spike camp. :)

Ahhh, yes....the old beer in the other guys pack trick.....done that a few times, until he started being able to tell the difference.

I've been wanting to try this for sometime now so finally today I broke down and bought a bottle. Looking forward to this evening.

In my wife's family they use crown or crown black, in our "Bull Bottle". I carried a small bottle of Glenlivet 18 last year.

I have tried several different brands of Scotch given to me when I told them I didn't care for it. They said "it's an aquired taste". Well I hope I never aquire that taste because it is just nasty, perhaps my tastebuds just aren't that refined. The description of wet rope and asphalt is very accurate.
I'll stick to good old Jack Daniel's for celebrations and everyday drinking.

Man, I wish that I could acquire a taste for Jack Daniels but it leaves my throat raw, like somebody took sandpaper to it, when I drink it. Oh, the money I could save, if I could just tolerate it.

Well I tried the Talisker and I gotta say, this ^^^just makes me smile. Maybe it is an acquired taste, if so, I think I've acquired it. Get a rope!! Oh, and maybe some asphalt, I love the taste of wet asphalt, in the morning!

I got a bottle of Suntory Hibiki as a gift and I have to say I am quite impressed. I don't think the Japanese half ass anything.

Having traveled to Japan and toured some whiskey joints, you are correct. They take pride in almost everything they do. Really cool culture.

I'm not a whisky connesiour by any means, but I have developed a taste for whisky on the rocks the last few year. Heck I even enjoy Crown on the rocks.

Reading through this thread really made me want to buy a bottle of Lagavulin but I was holding off, as I have plenty of other things I would like to buy before a $90 bottle of booze... went to a restaurant last week that had it so I ordered a glass, and boy am I glad I didn't buy a bottle. Maybe its an acquired taste, but I thought it was some of the worst scotch I've ever tasted. The only thing I can compare the flavor to is that it tasted like a band-aid. I know that's a weird comparison, but that's what it reminded me of. If it wasn't like $20 for the glass, I wouldn't have finished it....

Gonna have to say Glenlivet is still my favorite..

Lagavulin is an Islay scotch, if you didn't like it then you should stay away from all Islay scotches as they are all very bold and peaty like that. Lagavulin is more Band-aid while others like Laphroaig are more baseball glove and Ardbeg is more campfire. Glenlivet is a Speyside. My favorite Spayside is Balvanie Caribbean Cask. The Double Wood is pretty good, but the extra $10 for the Caribbean Cask is worth it.

Excellent information, thank you for that. Is there somewhere that will tell me what kind of scotch they are? Before I pick up a bottle at the store, it would be nice to know if I'll probably like it or going to hate it?

For instance, what kind of scotch is Johnny Walker?

Any store worth going to will usually have Scotch separated by region. However these are regions and not styles, so while regionally there are similarities in taste there is no reason why a highland scotch couldn't be made to taste like an Islay scotch, but it generally isn't done and the taste has a lot to do with the peat grown in the area. There are several online stores that you can use to see lists by region. Usually blended scotch (like JW) isn't identified by region, only single malts are.
