Equipment versus practice posts and Rifle practice/shooting

Did the drill the for the first time this year after having not practiced the drill for at least 6 months. Man I suck again. Now I've got a 223 with cheap ammo, I'll be doing more of this.

13 first round, 14 second round.

I seem to get hung up on the standing off hand when times as well as the seated with pack position. I can't get into position ast enough with a 35lb pack.

Gave it a try today, first time getting out shooting since the S2H winter course 2 months ago. Shot an 11/20, timed. A few near-misses and continue to struggle with offhand more than any other. Definitely need more practice. Also need to ditch the exo-carrier and pick up the stone glacier, I’m listing 3-5 seconds due to that rifle carrier being so snug on the stock…

Are you sweeping the carrier free? Grab rifle left hand, pop the lock w right, left hand drops to ride side, right hand sweeps down stock as left pushes forward w rifle.

At least in mind I think that’s what I do, occasionally I look like a monkey f’n a football doing it. I use the Kifaru lower carrier hanging from frame/water bottle area on Exo pack.

I am not, though perhaps I need to. My struggle is how tight the elastic on the exo is, it often pulls my bag a ways before it releases and is generally a PITA to load and unload. I imagine the kifaru one works well, I met multiple people using the SG lower on an exo and they were all much happier than the elastic/fitted exo version.

Just don't use the carrier. I don't. The only time I have my rifle the carrier is on my pack in before season opens, and after season closes or I've filled my tag. If it's open season, I'm carrying it.

Probably because I have the exo carrier. The kifaru bearer (I think) looks much better. @NSI was using one in Arizona that looked efficient. But also, not matter how efficient the carrier is, there are some shots you'll miss out on if your rifle isn't in your hands.

At the S2H winter course, this was the ultimate cheat code when we were competing in a timed format to hit a known target quickly. Those such as @Formidilosus who hunt with rifle in hand (and therefore were allowed to do this when competing) were probably saving 5-10 seconds compared to when they had the rifle strapped to their pack (which they did to make it somewhat fair for the rest of us after absolutely annihilating the competition).

7 seconds from carrier to 1st round hit on 10” plate at 200yards.

This is impressive and for a quick offhand shot, seems like a great compromise to get a shot off quickly. When I’ve tried this I have difficulty shooting well due to my backpack strap on my right shoulder and I don’t care for it as a result.

When I was discussing an extra 5-10 seconds needed at the course, that was for removing pack and rifle, then using the pack (or sticks from the pack) to set up the shot. Those carrying in hand just racked a round, thew down the pack, dropped into position and fired.

Those using a rifle carrier had to remove the pack, remove the rifle from the carrier, rack a round, get into portion and fire. It is a significant delay in this type of shooting.

The back pack shoulder strap certainly slows me down still, and is probably a big chunk of the time. I was surprised I wasn’t much quicker standing w rifle in hand. Scope covers slightly slow down things, but I’ve kind of built that in as rifle is being raised to shoulder.

I’d have to film the drill to see what I do, but I think rifle out of carrier, then pack off would be quicker. Forget about me getting sticks positioned quick enough to make time on the drill, I just shoot off upright pack for sitting supported.

Also, I’m not carrying a rifle unless I smell elk or in an area where I expect a to jump an animal. I’m lazy, so I try to train it in.
