Equipment versus practice posts and Rifle practice/shooting

I recall hearing on the podcast ages ago that they were going to drop an online version of their class. I get its not the same as in person training but zero chance I can attend one this year and would be very interested in tips of how to most efficiently get into positions for this drill, especially the sitting unsupported and supported. I know how I do it but am guessing its far from ideal.

Anyone know if thats out there somewhere and I missed it, or know of other good videos I could use? I set up a 100 yard range right out the door of my cabin so as good a set up as I could have to go straight from video to drills.
 
Did the Carl Ross drill today.. that’s humbling.. only fired 15 times. Got 5 out of 20.. I will get better! However that really makes you think about the times animals got away because you weren’t ready/practiced/whatever. Shooting at the range with no time limits is nothing in comparison to that. Will post again once I work on some fast position building.

Assuming the training is specific to hunting/killing big game, what's the disadvantage of shooting 1 conistent and conservative vitals size target (~8 or 10" plate) from every position and distance? Similar to the paper plate post earlier in the thread?
I started doing this with an 8" plate and really like it. The 100 yd drill is way more convenient and thorough, but I have a lot of spots where I can hang an 8" plate at 400 yards and walk in from there.

8" target ~=
7 MOA at 110 yds
5 MOA at 150 yds
3 MOA at 250 yds
2 MOA at 400 yds

I load up 4 rounds and walk up from 400 with what I carry when hunting, find a position at approximately those distances, and see if I can make the shot from the given position (prone, sitting supported, sitting unsupported, standing). I know my baseline performance from shooting the standard drill at 100 so this adds in ranging, dialing, wind, and terrain into my shot process. I get a lot out of it for a pretty low round count.

I haven't used a timer on it yet, that may be the next step. Maybe up it to 8 rounds and fire two shots from each position to keep practicing getting back on target quickly.
 
Gave the drill another try. First go was 9/20, j rushed a lot due to the timer and some trouble with getting gun caught on straps in the pack. Changed up how I mounted the gun to avoid tangled straps and tried again, got 13/20 that time, though lots of cut lines the second time. Still need more practice but glad to be in the double digits.

I attended an Appleseed 25m rimfire clinic this past weekend with my son. While not completely transferable to hunting, there were some good takeaways and most of all the opportunity to get out and do a lot of shooting in field positions with only your body and a sling for support.

I enjoyed the course thoroughly and would highly recommend it if you have one nearby.
 
I haven’t been shooting much, and it shows. Most of my time has been spent dog training.

One thing I noticed, for the timed positions, I was going far too fast. I was finishing in about 10 seconds, but missing. Other things I noticed:

I dislike offhand shooting
I’m normally much better at sitting, unsupported
I got in a hurry and shanked a prone/chip shot

Shooting is a perishable skill. A gun range owner (retired Army sniper) told me the days to learn the most are windy.....you also sometimes get the range all to yourself.
 
Had some free time this afternoon and it wasn’t blazing hot, so I made some empty rifle casings.

Slung to standing, empty chamber. Shoot one, repeat 4x. The two errant shots were 1 and 2. I think I finally got my standing shooting cleaned up as the remainder were all pretty clean. The three circled holes were three consecutive rounds as fast as I could get back on target.

Standing to unsupported prone, shoot five rounds as fast as the could get back on target. Need to clean up the vertical dispersion.

Have a pile of brass to anneal and size this weekend.
