I'm not sure if this has been talked about or not, but I was thinking of a way to "randomly" come up with a shooting distance and set up to help simulate a shot you would take while hunting. Also to help with the elevated heart rate. Basically, just another way to practice besides cold bore shots or the drill for positional shooting at 100 yards.

You will want to have a good place to shoot at though where you can set up your target where ever. If you can jog up some elevation even better.

Give me some ideas to help make it better or just give some feedback on it. I haven't been able to actually try this out yet.

Here is what I came up with.

Shooting Dice Practice (100-600 yards)
Some dice (at least one)
10" target
Must be done with hunting pack and gear as you would hunt.
2 min par time to setup and shoot after jog.
Shoot off of only what you carry in the field.
One shot per set.

Firearm safety obviously. (Don't have one loaded in the chamber while doing jog portion etc)

Start with:
Rifle unloaded
Rifle carried how you hunt
Pack worn and set up how you carry it for hunting

If shooting with a group:
Roll for shooting order (highest roll first lowest last)
First person rolls and each person follows the rules for that shot. The next person rolls then everyone does that shot sequence, etc. Until each person has rolled and created a shot.
Have fun and help each other get better. (Or give each other a hard time. Whatever floats your boat)

Wild card triples:
1's , 2's , or 3's: 30 seconds removed from par time and shoot standing OR kneeling with pack on.

4's , 5's , or 6's: Sprint yardage OR jog double the yardage and choose shooting position.

1st roll: Distance
1- 100 yards
2- 200 yards
3- 300 yards
4- 400 yards
5- 500 yards
6- 600 yards

2nd roll: Position
1- Prone
2- Sitting
3- Kneeling
4- Prone
5- Sitting
6- Kneeling

3rd roll: Yards to jog
1- 10 yards
2- 20 yards
3- 30 yards
4- 40 yards
5- 50 yards
6- 60 yards

I like this! Always fun to be creative with practice. I’ll add this to my repertoire.

Personally I’d change the running to # of burpees, and add offhand shooting with 1/4 distances. Just maybe switch to paper for those sub 100 yard shots to reduce ricochet.

I am gradually getting my steel hung around the farm so I can set up some sort of similar game. My goal is to get the steel targets in places where more than one shot angle is possible and safe. Then I will either work out a regular rotation where each shot is safe and I go through all the arrays during the course of my regular walk around the farm, or come up with a game.

But for now, I am inclined towards a rimfire game using dice, cards, etc. can all be done as a means of adding some randomness to the game. I use paper targets at 50 yards.

1 - standing
2 - kneeling
3 - hasty sitting
4 - sitting
5 - field rest (tree, fence post, etc.)
6 - prone

Aces - prone
Hearts - sitting
Clubs - kneeling
Diamonds - standing

Value is number of shots at that position. So, king of diamonds would be 15 standing shots. My goal in a given session is usually 200-300 shots. Doing a full deck would be a good way to spend an afternoon!

Since the reality is that most of us will always have a phone, one could also use the Google random number generator to generate the target number and shooting position. Or just use it to generate the shooting position as I come up to each target.

The important thing is to be safe, have fun, and just shoot more!
