Eld-x not performing as expected

I once I had a 215 hybrid not exit on a whitetail buck at under 100 yards. When it came in on ribs. Caused hell though.

My guess is the shank is all that exited, and that’s not that abnormal imo if the front fell off.

I’d like to see the insides.

I’ve shot lots of deer drt, and I’ve had lots of deer with enormous wound cavities and tons of damage run a bit. Is what it is if you’re putting bullets in the chest cavity.

Welcome to rokslide.

I don't see how it's possible that the bullet hit 3 ribs and had a bullet-sized exit. Did you gut the animal and find any jacket pieces or the bullet shank in the gutpile? Sometimes on fragmenting bullets, the exit you see is just a piece of the jacket that exited rather than the shank/core of the bullet.

As others have said, a lung shot definitely doesn't guarantee a dead-right-there animal. You'll have to shoot for the front shoulder if you want that result, at the cost of some meat. Especially the offside shoulder if you're shooting a 300 PRC.
Didnt find any piece of the bullet inside, seem like it broke the ribs and get out full swing

As said maybe its just the fact that it’s a first time for me as they always drop like potato

You wouldn't expect that if you understood how bullets kill things.

Edit: I think that could be read as too mean. If you spend some time around this forum you will learn a bit about what makes bullets perform (velocity, not energy) and how bullets then kill things. It is not because of some magic shockwave that hits the animal and knocks it out.

Only on rokslide....

Velocity is a dependent variable and by itself does not kill. Velocity doesn't even make the bullet do anything. It's a delivery mechanism only.

The most inaccurate comparison I've ever heard is comparing a heavy slow projectile to a light fast projectile that has equal energy but different terminal results and then stating energy is irrelevant.

It's an apples and oranges comparison.

Probably just the stump of the Jacket or core, eldx will shed 60-80% on bone impact .
I shot a deer in the neck and when I got into the chest cavity it was a mess
The jacket was in the neck & core separation went wonky and sideways into the lungs it’s a eldx after all and the slide loves them and TMK explosion

I said perform, not kill. If you want to disagree on that, take it up with Hornady. They give minimum velocity for the ELD-X, not energy. Velocity makes the bullet perform, and that performance is what kills the animal.

Usually blood loss, preferably rapid blood loss, leading to organ failure. I think the high-falutin’ term for “bleeding out” might be hypovolemic shock.

Barring major CNS disruption, is there another way?

What did the lungs look like? My guess is the bullet went it, destroyed everything in the chest, and the core separated and exited while the jacket stayed inside.

Didnt find any bullet piece but not impossible, the inside was a mess. As said previously he died quick it was just my expectation based upon latest experience that he should not have run

This is probably similar to what made your exit wound. This is a 143 ELDX that impacted at 2950 fps, core separated after recovering the bullet.

I’ve just create my account to get help or education on the subject. Dont know why im pissing you off but have a nice day chief

it’s more the fact that it hits 3 ribs and still the exit hole is the size of the bullet
What did the vitals look like?

Deer was dead nearby? You sure it didn't shed some weight and the base exit?
Hi guys anyone else ad trouble with a eldx bullet at close range? Last year my 300 prc shot her first deer at 460 yard just hammer it down, this year at closer range, 173 yard bullet hit 3 ribs and still the exit is no more than the bullet size, ad to call a dog to find the deer who was dead nearby but in tall grass so we never find him, without reloading the choice for the 300prc is limited for hunting purposes
Thanks

Heck, you’re not pissing me off. I’m just expressing my opinion.

Shoot an animal through the lungs, 90% of the time it’s gonna run, regardless of what you hit it with. I saw a video of a guy shooting a WT doe with a 50 BMG broadside through the lungs. She ran off until her brain ran out of oxygen. I’ve shot a bunch of animals than ran until the brain shut down. It’s biology.

CNS hits are a different story, again regardless (mostly) of cartridge.

Blaming the bullet is kinda comical, again my opinion only.

And thanks for the well-wishes, I’m having an excellent day so far.

Edit to add, in my opinion energy figures are worthless.

Sure he died but appears that im wrong for assuming he should have drop right there like they use to in the past it’s the first out of maybe 10 deer for me that didn’t drop right there guess im just not use to it
10 kills is such a low metric to base any sort of “data” on. It’s not even data really.

ELDX reliably destroys bones when hit, all the way down to 80 grain in .224 diameter.

A “high shoulder” shot does not guarantee “the animal goes nowhere”. There is no guarantee in this regard.

Heavy for caliber high BC properly designed tipped bullets like the ELDX is, are the fastest to incapacitation bullets you can use.
