Recipe for success (you can insert your brand of choice). My sons made it to 12 just fine. It’s not a silly fear and kids are our most precious gift but that’s also why not carrying isn’t really a good alternative (imo)

Good holster, and leave it there until you are ready to use it. My kids saw me carry everyday growing up, it was normal to them. Got into a sketchy situation when we got the Jeep stuck in the woods one time, and realized we interrupted some meth heads doing something. I had a Berreta 92 in an IWB and my whole family (the kids were young) was very happy I had that Berreta on me.

One other thing. The biggest chance of an accidental discharge will be when you are cleaning your gun. NEVER clean the gun around the kids!!!!!!

I knew a guy who shot his GF while decocking a .25. Almost killed her. He didn't follow the rule that said not to point gun at folks you weren't gonna shoot.

Used to carry with empty chamber and trained to rack the slide while drawing.

These days we do off body carry with empty chambers when the grandkids are involved.

What about pocket carry, in a holster that completely covers the trigger guard? Maybe not the perfect solution, but something like a NAA Guardian 380 would be better protection than no protection.

Why is that better than a gun in a holster on your belt?

And NEVER clean it while it's loaded. ;)

If the worry is that big of a deal, then just leave the chamber empty. But that could have downsides as well. Physically training, and mentally training are a big deal.

I've always carried for the most part except when we were overseas. My kids knew that, they understood it, and they knew to leave my guns the heck alone. Train, train, train. My kids would have been shocked if I wasn't carrying.

Pick up a used Sig 250 or 229 on gunbroker.
P-250 is a very, very safe carry gun. Recessed hammer that must cycle to fire and very long trigger pull dao, just put thumb over hammer when handeling it...I have carried one for 10 years and now switch between that and a fn 509m.

Pretty much any handgun is safe if it is in the holster....should not matter where a holstered gun is pointed. Plus you can always carry with an empty chamber.....but you need to train that way a lot.

Don't forget it's a 2 way street. When my boys were little I picked up prop pistol and would leave it laying around the house randomly. They had standing instructions if they find a gun not to touch dont let anybody else touch it and come find an adult immediately and tell them. It wasn't that I left guns laying around at my house but when they have play dates, sleepovers or other environments not under my control they have awareness and know what to do. Your not with your kids every moment of the day knowledge is the best insurance you can give them to stay safe.

Same here.
All of you "I'll rack the slide if I get in trouble" guys should watch Active Self Protection on youtube. You will see a lot of people with your mindset getting killed. I watch that channel religiously and I don't think I've ever seen an example of someone successfully chambering a round in a self defense situation. Not once that I recall.

For everyone that carries with the chamber empty, I really hope you all train like that and train a lot. The day you need it to go bang, you want it to go bang and not click.

Dad of 3 with girls who like to climb on me A LOT. I carry a 365XL in a Henry's Holsters appendix rig, and I ALWAYS carry hot. I've never worried about an AD/ND with them around, but I'm fairly diligent about not letting them play with my shirt up or stand on me there, etc. Appendix carry gives me way more confidence in being able to control the firearm both while carrying and/or during a confrontation.

I would whole heartedly stay away from leather being its more pliable than GOOD kydex.
