It's not like CO or WY where they go through everyone's 1st choice first. Then move to 2nd choices.

NM just depends on if all the tags are already gone for your choices (moving from 1, 2, 3) when your name gets randomly drawn.

I've seen this a few times. 1st time ever applicants, register on the NM site, user name, ID, etc. Apply for 16A, you'll hit 16A.
That's how I did it. Then it's a waste of time to every apply for 16A again.

Ive drawn 2nd choice for deer a time or 2. But that was when i could draw a deer tag. Very frustrating when guys are drawing tags as a second or 3rd choice in the unit you applied as a first choice and dont draw. Gotta love the luck of the draw.

Are you saying that the system is rigged to award first time applicants a hunt but then they will never draw again? If so I beat the system by not drawing a thing my first time applying.

Yep happened to me and my buddy back to back years. Drew 16A and 16D first time apps about 5 years back. Then they get you for life lol.

This also happened with two buddies last year. One drew 16D first time ever applying. The other drew 21A as second choice again first time ever applying.

I'm telling you!! NM sucks you in. I won't even apply for 16A anymore, because I know it'll never happen again. Last year, I drew nothing. Had to go back to CO.

10 zillion people apply for 16A & 16D. and I hit it on my 1st year applying in NM. What are the odds of that..?? Too bad the guide sucked.

It all depends on your selections. As a resident I almost exclusively drew my 3rd choice. My first two choices were always hard to draw high demand hunts, third choice was always a hunt I had good odds of drawing. Same experience for my out of state buddies I helped put in. If you only put for first choice units you will only draw on your first choice.

The answer to this question won't provide any valuable input. It depends on when your application number gets drawn and what hunts you applied for. That being said, I've only ever drawn my first choice for deer (3 resident/2 nonresident). and I've gone 0/8 on elk apps.

Kind of like going to a casino for the first time and dropping a quarter in the slot and winning 5k.
