this is the answer. Terrible winters, wind and flat, vast nothingness
The movie Fargo ( great flick ) was enough to erase any thoughts I might have had about living there. Buffalo, NY....... they must make people live in places like that.

I grew up in a Louisiana and am a product of their public schools. #49 in the nation…thanks to Mississippi.

Not to dump my my neighbor, but Mississippi is the armpit of the US to me. It has an unremarkable stretch of coast down south and then it is pretty much featureless, loblolly pine forests just waiting to get turned into 2x4s all the way north to Memphis. If you google “top 10 attractions in Mississippi” you get Elvis‘s birth place and nine things that are uncomfortably connected to slavery.

IMO, most states have at least one feature that really shines - New Orleans or New York City for example - and a few other interesting parts. I can’t name a single thing about Mississippi that stands out.

We travel to Nebraska to visit my wife's family and the drive is so mind numbing. I do like seeing western SD on the way back but other than that it's just so plain and boring. The show me state is another flat boring state. The Midwest is so flat and humid I'd go crazy living there. I did hunt whitetails in nw Nebraska and that was decent country.

I haven't been to all the states, but to play along, I'll go with Mississippi. Most places have redeeming qualities and nice places to get lost when you disregard politics.

Flat and humid you say? Florida has just over 300 feet of max relief vs 4600 in Nebraska. There is no flatter, more humid state than Florida.

I'm going to Mississippi next week! My daughter is graduating from Ole Miss. IMO Oxford is an awesome small town and the Ole Miss campus is beautiful. My wife and daughter enjoy going to Natchez too but I agree that living in the delta or some other parts of the state would suck but I think that is true for a large part of the south. A lot of states, cities, towns and long stretches of highway suck for different reasons. If I had a choice, I much prefer driving west on I90 more than I80, I70 or I40 and probably in that order of preference. That said, there are few places in the US I dislike more than NYC. I've been going there since I was a small kid and I never enjoy it.

Like I-70 is to Kansas, I-80 doesn't do Nebraska any favors either. I actually hate I-80 worse than I-70, mostly because I-80 is all the same for hundreds of miles. At least I-70 you get some change between the eastern deciduous forest, to the Flint Hills, to the ag heavy flatness, back to the Smoky Hills, and then the places where big bucks hide in plain sight.

Anyway, Nebraska is a beautiful state if you get out of the I-80 corridor. Has a lot of good scalping country.
I don't really like Missouri as a state, but the natural beauty is undeniable, the Ozarks in particular. I've spent a lot of time down there, could retire there even if I got the right piece of ground.

In my opinion most states have their good and bad points. To many people, to much crime, to hot and humid. to cold and snow. One has to decide what they are Ok dealing with. There is no perfect location which suits everyone. Being an older member of the slide, I would say pleasant year round weather and access to quality medical is important. I have friends who chose to move to a small town (15,000 population) which has terrible health care. they finally figured that out and are now traveling anywhere from 100, up to 400 miles to get the quality care they need. Since they moved there, both have had on going health issues, fortunately nothing life threatening to this point. But at some point that will be a real problem. Both are in their mid. 70"s.

Then why do 99% of y'all coonasses come here to hunt? I could say the same thing about LA. You have Grand Isle as the only beach and that's if it is still there. There's not much difference in MS and LA once you get north of I-10. Some of my best friends live in South LA. They come here to hunt, we go there to fish. But we ain't that different.

No offense intended. Yes, I have been there on business many times. Mostly Newark area.

That’s the part( I -95 Corridor) that every stereotypical joke about NJ comes from. That area is just S—t. Get 30 minutes west or south and it’s a whole different state. The NE corner of the state has the majority of the population do to proximity to NYC and also when Ellis Island was open for immigrants that was the nearest and many family’s just never left.

North Dakota. God lost his imagination in that state
You're crazy, I was not born in ND but i did live there for a while and ND is an outdoorsman paradise IMO.
World class fishing year round
World Class Darkhouse spearing
Waterfowl paradise spring & FALL
Big Mule Deer
Big Whitetail
BIG ELK
BIG antelope
Big MOOSE
BIG bighorn sheep
Great lion hunting in the western part of the state
Great pheasant hunting
Phenomenal coyote hunting
Great Prairie Dog shooting
SWAN HUNTING
Great Paddlefish population

Looks to me like God's imagination was working overtime for the outdoorsman when it came to North Dakota

I like the Platte river valley. The sandhills are cool as well as the Pine Ridge area.

It has a few definitions and the context plays a part. Let’s error on the side of caution when using it. (for the record I don’t think it was used in a negative manner here).

Per thread title, North Dakota. We put up with a cr@p ton of horrible weather. Yes I love fishing and hunting during the 3 days the wind is not hammering or snow blowing up your butt crack. (BTW. Ice is still covering many lakes today! No BS)

It was stated best by my cousin during the 80's when a newcomer asked him what there was to do during summer time. (Guy was working oilfield). Cousin asked him "Do you fish or play softball? Because if you don't, you better like to drink because that is the only thing left to do."
