I've only ever been able to breathe out of one nostril my whole life. It's not a structural blockage but more of a one is always clogged with junk/snot. I had a minor procedure a few years back to "fix" it but that never really did much. My mom had an issue with this as well.

Who has had a more intense procedure and what was the before/after like for you?

I had what doctors considered a severely deviated septum with about a 98% blockage on my left side for most my life. Decided to catch a soda can with my face when I was really young and then it grew crooked. Had surgery at 19 years old that didn't fix anything (after a semi-rough recovery). Then at about age 33, I had another surgery on it by Dr. Grunebaum, a very well qualified specialist at Mayo in Phoenix. She said I had one of the worst noses she had ever seen but felt that she could substantially improve my breathing with just an endoscopic septoplasty procedure. I did the surgery and have experienced a substantial improvement in my breathing and the recovery was not bad at all (way better than the first surgery). So, my suggestion is that its worth spending some time and maybe extra money to find a doctor who is well qualified to do perhaps a more complex procedure.

Thank you! How soon after were you able to exercise? I have a baby coming in 90ish days so I was thinking of trying for sooner rather than later. I also have turkey season in a couple of weeks.

I had a septoplasty done several years ago. I broke my nose in high school playing football and never went to the Dr. Well 10+ years later, my right nostril was %100 blocked with cartilage causing me to be a mouth breather because I couldn’t breath through my nose comfortably. So I finally had the surgery and have been able to breath through both nostrils ever since and sleep comfortably. The doctor said he had never seen one as bad as mine. He said “I literally took a 2x4 to your nose trying to hammer all that junk out”.

I took a fairly conservative approach in my opinion. It depends on the degree of exercise of course, but I was back to lower cardio activity stuff such as lifting weights after about a two weeks. Probably could have done stuff early to be honest but didn’t want to push it. I also eased back into lifting. I was back to hiking and running after about a month, but I felt like I could have been fine earlier. I’d suspect the doc would advise you on that based upon their check in evaluation a week or two after your surgery.

I had horrible breathing that I believe was caused by having 178 amateur fights (boxing) over a 12 year period. Go figure! Thought I was only hit on the snot locker "twee times." My nose was blocked about 95% on one side and 82% on the other side. I went to a clinic here in Missoula and they roto-rootered my nose big time. It really helped on my breathing and helped immensely. I should have done it much sooner.

Got the CT results back on my son. Everything is as good as its going to get. The Dr. said it's pretty dang good. My son keeps saying he can't breathe thru his left nostril as good. The Dr. said that is actually the right that he can't breathe thru as good. What's is happening is when he breathes out his right it has some good pressure because it's restricted just a little bit. But the left side is wide open so it's doesn't have the pressure the left side does. I am not sure if I made sense with all that.
