I've heard of a guy that does....

Dick's special ADL 7-08, 6x42 Leupold M1, McSwirly.

Tikka '06, 155 Scenars, same scope.

1969 M70, 270 150 ABLR's, can't remember the stock (it's had 9), 2 guesses on the scope.

Running to 500 is not as hard as some think and a damn good place to stop....

You make a great point !! I have seen your post and you obviously have spend time on the back end of a rifle. You touched on something I have been toying with in my mind. a NF NSX 2.5x10 for shooting to 700-1,000 yards. Do you think I would be disappointed with being underglassed?

I've never shot that far or spent that much on glass!! I don't own anything more than 10X and think you'd be blown away with what a $259.99 SWFA scope will do. A guy with a decent 308, SWFA glass, LRF, amd ball ammo could do quite a bit of bell ringing if he ignored the nay sayers and had a decent trigger finger.

The problem with most scopes in the 10x range is when you start stretching the range the reticle covers most of the target. The saying of aim small miss small goes out the wayside. I know it was done for years with lower power scopes but there's a reason technology advances. I would say minimum 15x for 1000 yard shooting.

Depends on the reticle I suppose. I shot my buddies 20X at 500 and all I saw was wiggle. If you're not paying attention it turns into target panic.

I have what might or might not be called a semi custom. It's a Legendary Arms Works Professional Model in 6.5 Creedmoor. I'm fortunate to be a mfg. rep and I was able to purchase it at the wholesale price. A friend is a rep for Leica and I was able to get a ERi 2.5-10 X 42 #4reticle at his sample price. This scope sits in Talley Lightweight mounts which I paid retail for. When I received the rifle the trigger was horrible and it went back to have a new trigger installed. In spite of the bad trigger it shot very well before it was sent back. While back for the trigger they also re-bedded the stock as if they were experiencing problems with other rifles. It was returned very quickly and has been super ever since.

Would I have done the purchase at full or close to retail prices I don't think so. Especially with whats showing up on the shelves everyday now. Like I said it's a shooter and kinda pretty to.

I'm new here so I'll just leave my opinion which is worth about as much as you paid for your coffee this morning. That's the great thing about the rifle industry today. If your finances allow you to spend $5,000 on a rifle and $3000 on a scope, this is great!! There is a TON of difference in a full custom and an off the shelf rifle. Most in the details and perfection.

Does this make the rifle shoot "better", maybe .25 moa?, surely NOT enough to cause a huge uproar. It's up to you to decide if this means anything to you. Most of us cannot shoot well enough to take advantage of this accuracy difference. Especially at "normal" hunting ranges 300 yards max. Further than this the full custom will give you an advantage IF YOU can make the shot. My go to rifle is a full custom McWhorter Rifle in 6.5 Weatherby Magnum. It's a true .25 moa gun with a Swarovski 5-25X56 with their custom ballistic turret. At my friends range, sitting on a bench in great weather, I spin the turret to "7" and I can center punch a 10X10" steel plate all day long @ 700 yards. the GUN will do it with ease. Now, I'm sitting in my deer blind, there are 12-15 Axis deer across my coastal field sunning themselves. I range them at 500 yards.....chip shot for this rig, correct??? Well maybe, I've sighted on them, feel I can make the shot BUT I don't shoot cuz I'm not going to shoot one in the azz just to see if I can.

So, if you can afford custom you will love your rifle, if you can just afford the Tikka and a Leopold VXi, you will love your rifle. There are no right or wrongs.

If you're looking for strictly accuracy improvements a custom will very seldom validate it's price. To me the value comes more from the following reasons:
- Chambering of choice - Can build a wildcat if desired, can reduce tolerances and neck diameter for better brass life, can reduce freebore to efficiently mag feed high BC bullets from a standard mag or increase freebore to load long bullets long and improve the performance of the cartridge.
- Spec your Magazine - Longer box than factory to feed long High BC bullets
- Stock Choice - Get exactly what you want in shape, LOP, butt pad, Stock fill material, and finish
- Perfect action bedding
- Barrel Length, profile, and twist to desired performance and projectile. Spec muzzle threading to your needs.
- Custom barrel - for accuracy but also likely improved fouling characteristics
- Metal cerakote or dip to your choice

You have to geek out on this stuff a bit to find the value. That said, a lot of times people can spec out a rifle where the parts just don't work out as well as a well thought out factory or "factory custom".

All very true points

my son-in-law purchased a LAW 300 Win Mag at SW for $1699 - very nice rifle - so far has less than a box of Nosler AB 180's through it and one dead cow to it's credit - I like what they are doing
Is the Leica scope made by Leica ? they do second to none binoculars

If you are seeing wiggle at 500 you aren't solid and need more practice in how you set the rifle up. Another benifit of a custom is how balanced the rifle is.

I saw me a scope once.
Lol I bet you have. Apparently I offended you and I'm sorry. I'm not questioning anyone's shooting capability. I'm simply stating a reticle covering the target vs a reticle that will cover a smaller section of a target are going to show differences in accuracy. I figured pictures were the easiest way to explain this. Yes they are not to a perfect scale but I'm pretty sure most guys understand what I am stating.
