Create your own ethos

Set of rules or a code in which you live by.

But deep in your core, as if violating said code would be to spite against god.

That’s an ethos

Serious question, are there men among us that don't have an ethos? I had just assumed we were all (most, you know) principled. Certainly not saying I am or anyone else is infallible, but I certainly have beliefs that drive my actions. I try to live a purposeful life. I assumed that was mostly the norm.

People say they have “principles”. However,
when those principles will cost them something they value, very few hold to them- people always find a way to justify bending a bit. Which means they weren’t really “ethos”, they were niceties that were followed when convenient. People that have true principles or “ethos” as @BeastOfTheTrees mentioned are generally noticed very quickly because they are hard to work with.
People that don’t bend because to do so would be to “spite their god”, are generally very difficult to be around for most people. The individual in the OP’s video is an example. Most believe that people like him are normal or common in “special” organizations in the military- they are not. He is an outlier of outliers. Whether his focus was correct or not is open for debate, however he believes to his core what he states, and that is is difficult for most people.

I think you're alluding to a hierarchy of principles and/or values. To cite a recent example, one's principles could have precluded them from getting a COVID vaccine; but that could also have led to them getting fired and not being able to provide for their family. Some principled people had to work that out for themselves.

Principles, ethics and a code should be a part of becoming a man.

I grew up with an old school dad, lot like John Wayne, so I have always been fond of what he said in "the shootist"
"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them."

Furthermore, I believe I have a moral obligation to provide for my family, be faithful to my wife and those go along with my faith in God.

Taking care of yourself and your health is the best gift you can give yourself and your family. That won't happen without discipline.

how do we talk about ethos in a country that is in the state we are in?
I do agree with you. That being said, there's a good chunk of us that don't live in liberal metro areas that voted us into the mess we're in. Come out here to Oklahoma in a small town and go to the post office or hardware store and I guarantee it would be like going back in time for most.

Seems you have missed the point......

So if everyone else is stealing....are you going to "Get yours?" Its these folks that Goggins is pointing a finger at....

Of course you aren't Zap.....A personal Ethos is not affected by what everyone else does.... the fact that crap is flying all around us should only increase our motivation to hold the course.

Oh ya, then of course. But I didn't create mine, I was born with it. And I can't go against it even if I wanted. It's part of my OCD, my type AAA, and just who and what I am. I can't go against it even if it costs me money, opportunity, or ruins my life by not doing it. Just can't do it. If a man doesn't have and stick to principles, he has nothing.

When crap is flying all around us it is best to dodge it.
I see society having deteriorated enough to be beyond hope.

I can't think of a book or single piece of media that has affected my life more than this podcast. It changed my outlook on life, how I attack my goals, my ambition, diet and exercise.

When I start to fall off the path with my diet, exercise or working on my goals, I listen to this podcast and am good again for several months.
