So onX is discontinuing iphoneX?

They are not continuing development or support for any ios older than 17. The app will continue to work as it does now.

from Onx on another forum..

"I do want to note that an iPhone 16 is different than iOS 16. So if you bought an iPhone 16, you're able to update the operating system to the newest version and be good to go.

With the release of our next app version our oldest supported iOS version will be updated from iOS 16 to iOS 17 / iPadOS 17. This does not mean onX will stop working completely on devices running iOS 16. When we discontinue support for a specific OS version, it means that we no longer develop or test new code/features on that now unsupported iOS version. We discontinue support for older iOS versions to focus on developing features and fixing issues for the vast majority of users who are on more recent versions.

Customers on unsupported iOS versions can no longer update their onX app beyond the last version that supported the newly discontinued iOS version. Because they can no longer update their app version, they won’t have access to new features or fixes unless they update to a supported OS.

If you purchased a new iPhone and iPad recently, it is unlikely your devices are impacted by this change.

Apple devices as far back as the iPhone X support iOS 17 - devices released as early as 2019.

If you need help updating your iOS version, or you want to check if your device is able to update to a compatible iOS version, please send us an email at [email protected]. "

That is literally the business model for every tech company EVER created…including apple and OnX.

Yes, some hardware manufacturers are worse than others though and OnX can’t be expected to continue software support on every phone or electronic device that was ever created. It’s not their fault that Apple is one of the prime examples of this.

I could not tell you as I use an android. I tried to use my I phone with onx and all I did was fight with it. I have basemap on my android and it has never given me any issues. My personal opinion is onx is way overrated, but again that is my own opinion.

Both iOS and Android do major operating system updates (i.e. moving from version 17 to 18) annually. Every time a new version comes out app developers basically have to go through and test all the functionality of their app and redevelop features that are not compatible with the new version. You want to do this because Apple and the android OEM's are eventually going to start force updating devices to the newer operating systems. Also new devices being sold in market come with the latest OS. So it doesn't take long before 90+% of users are on operating systems from the last 4 or 5 years, most in the last 2 years.

Pretty much every app develops new features toward the newer operating systems. Developers can choose to continue to offer older versions of the app in the stores but they often may not have the latest features. You basically end up with a version of the app that is static.

The problem with that is there is other infrastructure that has to support those older versions of the app. Like authenticating an account for instance. If a developer updates the way that works they either need to update the old app version or now support 2 versions of authentication...one supporting old static apps and one for new versions.

So it ends up being that your whole backend software architecture has to support all the older versions too. At some point companies just do the old cost/benefit of keeping older versions around.

Indeed. The iPhoneX doesn't run that OS so even though it worked before, it's going to stop? It was a good backup phone :(

In case you haven't gathered this yet, no, it will not stop working. It will work exactly the same as it does right now, you will just stop getting updates and new features for the OnX app.
