Best ones from the past year:

Whiskey Myers -- Red Rocks
(Brent Cobb opened, it was in the middle of a rain storm, absolutely wild, best by far)

Them Dirty Roses -- Denver
(Closer to southern rock, small venue)

Chris Knight -- Boulder
(Had always wanted to see him ever since A Pretty Good Guy)

I’m not really into the mainstream, new age, country. Who are you listening to? Some of my favorites:

Sturgill Simpson
Whiskey Myers
Brent Cobb
Jamey Johnson
Cody Jinks
Childers, Stapleton, Wall

Then of course the old school guys who are always in style.

Who am I missing that I need to add into the mix?
You might like some of the Drive-By Truckers stuff before Jason Isbell left (pre-2008) if you haven't checked them out yet.

Few more that I didn't see listed:

Uncle Tupelo
(No Depression/Anodyne both good albums, kind of the start of modern day "alt-country")

Lucero
(Kind of a unique sound, their music is in a lot of Jeff Nichols movies if you're familiar with any of his stuff, lead singer is Ben Nichols, they're brothers)

Justin Townes Earle
(RIP)

Tedeschi Trucks Band
(If you really like guitar music, and haven't already, check out Derek Trucks)

Chris Knight is kinda a boring show. But so incredible.

We've seen him probably a half dozen times, and it always blows me away that songs and a little banter are that engaging and fun.

(and I've been to HUNDREDS of shows)

I haven't been to anywhere near even 100 shows. That's first time I'd seen Chris Knight live. I really enjoyed it. I know exactly what you mean, though, I think the smaller venues really work for him.

[...] Only song that has really impressed me in the last couple years is Parker Mccollum's Handle on You. The tempo is too popish, but the lyrics are spectacular [....]
Let's not drag religion into it ... LOL

I believe when you were thinking about a good *country* drinking song, you meant something like this: ;)
