Few thoughts:

-Shooting steel is fun but paper eliminates doubt.

-Spotting shots in field conditions can sometimes be very difficult. Add in light guns and no video, and it gets even more difficult. Spotting your shots is a skill in itself and I’d venture to say even more difficult than shooting a perfect shot.

-A few ranging errors. Ranging your target is also a skill, and more difficult in the field. Learning my rangefinder wasn’t something I even considered before listening to a few podcasts on nrl hunter. Not often thought about. But makes a huge difference when your yardage is off.

- Lots of edge hits. Good thing they didn’t say a 10” diamond

All good points. I think this challenge is showing each person exactly what things they need to work on to be more effective.

The whole point of this is education so we are making good decisions in the field when it really matters.

Agree with all of that. Personally have been building my guns to maximize ability to spot shots, solo with no spotter. Can’t use a suppressor and won’t hunt with a muzzle break which has lead me to basically creedmoor sized cases with 9.5-10.5 lb builds. As a bonus they are fairly cheap to shoot which results in more rounds down range and improving wind calls!

Are there any spots left? Got some ammo loaded up this afternoon for my new Tikka 7SAUM and it’s shooting lights out!

I’d like to give it a go tomorrow morning for my cold bore 600 yard qualifier if there is room in the challenge left?

Thanks for an excellent event and prizes! Awesome stuff.

Still spots it looks like. I bet it'll fill by mid next week.

There are still spots left, and there will likely be people who don't finish, so we will be taking a few alternates. I'll get a count this weekend to see exactly how we're doing.

Page 1, post #19 updated if you want to see how well (or bad, as it turns out) an old table saw blade works as a target.

Shot #2 done this morning, a hit. Followed up with two more (both hits) since my first shot had been a miss. I wanted to see which shot was real. Confirmed that my first shot had been a poor trigger press as I thought. I did hedge a little and dialed ½ MOA less for this shot. Proceeded put all 3 in the bottom ⅓ of the plate.

Updated my shooting setup with more details.

Thanks to all who are putting in the work to run this challenge, and to all the sponsors who are giving awesome prizes!

You weren't kidding! Pressure is on for shot #2 now!
I think I’m in love with this new build.

Put 100 rounds through it with 5 different “candidate” load options this week getting ready for today. Settled on a load that actually had the lowest average muzzle velocity (barely) but the average velocity spread and groups were the tightest. Called it good and made up another 60 rounds.

Shot 40 rounds with that load yesterday evening confirming hits and building my chart. Used the chart this morning (background image on my phone) for that 613 yard shot and bingo!
